That is a good deal IMO. Pop in another 4 gigs of RAM and I would be perfectly satisfied with that thing. And by that I mean she should be very happy with it. Plenty of CPU for a laptop doing what you described.

Should be just fine as is. Wouldn't bother with more RAM personally. You can always add more later if you feel the need.

Thanks for the input. I know nothing about laptop processors. She has an ancient Dell B130 now, I think this will make for a nice upgrade.

Well at the $400 price point it is. An i3 based Intel laptop would be generally be better in the CPU department but the nice thing about the A8 is that the CPU is good enough and also includes an on die AMD Radeon HD7640G graphics card. In tandem they make for an arguably better solution than an i3. It really depends on your specific work load but I don't think you will go wrong at that price.

I did see i3s go as cheap as $350 over Black Friday/Cyber Monday but those sold out quick.

Just looked at the specs of the Dell. Should be a very noticeable improvement. Don't forget to make Backup DVD's. And the last HP laptop I set up had a good bit of extra software to remove (for better performance), not that Dell is any different.
