The 10 biggest "BOOMS" in scifi?
So far I got the Death Star blowing up Alderaan
Carter blowing up a star in Stargate SG1
McKay blowing up a solar system in Stargate:Atlantis
Help me out here.

Don't know why the Ancients couldn't dominate the galaxy if they had the power to blow up a solar system.

It was an unstable reactor. They couldn't finish it without it blowing up and taking out said solar system. Also, it was 5/6th of the system not the entire thing,

Probably along the lines of why Gordon Freeman wielded things like a gravity gun that could whip heavy objects all over the place at high speed, or a rocket launcher, yet things like a locked rickety door would stop him dead in his tracks:
Story writers not thinking things through.
Attero Device: Blows up Wraith ships entering hyperspace. Also blows up Stargates. Ok, solution: Send a command to shut down all gates in the network. Then go hunt down slow-moving Wraith ships. Turn gates back on. Profit.

Exactly. In fact, it seemed like it was pretty reliable about the "blowing up" part. We built unstable uranium and plutonium fission reactors. We called them "atomic bombs."

You can't really take over the galaxy when your primary method of takeover is destroying every habitable solar system

"Fear will keep the local systems in line."
Fear that their sun won't rise the following morning, because a blast of exotic particles that defy known physics destroyed it. And all the planets orbiting it.
It depends on your goals, too. If you just want to make the galaxy a calm and peaceful place, wiping out all other inhabited planets is a way to reach that goal.
In that case though, it'd be easier to use the Dakara superweapon.
(Yeah, for that matter, why bother with Attero or Arcturus? Just hit the format&reinstall button on the Deus Ex/Dakara superweapon. )

It was only 3/4 of a solar system. Give Meredith some credit here.

From Gunbuster:
"The aliens are coming back, and in retaliation Earth has been working on a small planet sized black hole bomb, which has been created using the mass of Jupiter pressured into the size of the moon. This when it is detonated, along with 3,000 'slave mines' placed around the center of the galaxy, will cause a black hole to be formed that will suck the space monsters in."

Not to mention destroying and rebooting the entire universe.
Also,I think in the Xeelee sequence wars involve tossing black holes back and forth.

Forget science fiction, in real life we had the Clarke Event's signature reaching us a few years ago after travelling a whopper 7.5 billion light years and yet still visible to the naked eye.

Do games count? Then the Shivans destroying Capella by means of making the sun go supernova has to count for something.

That's just 1 spell.. how do you continue the game when everything was destroyed?
