Will the Portland mall gunman stop you from shopping?
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/1...n_2280786.html
PORTLAND, Ore. — A gunman opened fire in a suburban Portland shopping mall Tuesday, killing two people and wounding another as people were doing their Christmas shopping, authorities said.
Witnesses described a scene of chaos and disbelief as a gunman wearing some sort of camouflage outfit and a white mask shot an initial burst of fire and then more rounds at Clackamas Town Center. Shoppers tried to find safe areas as teams of police officers began entering the mall to find the shooter.
Clackamas County sheriff's Lt. James Rhodes said later that the gunman was dead, but he wouldn't say how he died or provide any details about him.
Authorities were going store-to-store to secure the scene and to escort hiding shoppers outside, but Rhodes said there was no indication that there was more than one shooter.
Anyone worried that there might be copycats?

This isn't the first mall shooting nor will it be the last.
It's not going to stop consumers from consuming.

breaking news - if you go out into a large public area with lots of people, it's pretty easy to shoot someone! stop the fucking presses!
seriously, there is nothing stopping anyone from doing this, except being a rational person.

I don't shop at any malls but no, I'm not worried about copycats. Seriously if I worried about everything that happened in the world I'd be stricken with such paranoia I couldn't even function.

Damn, people can't even shot for Christmas without the possibility that some wacko with a Gun might open fire looming over their head.

I would definitely avoid malls and other places that have tons of people in big cities at any time of the year, but especially now where it's even more packed. That's where the terrorists and shooters tend to come out as they have more people they can kill. This stuff is happening more and more regularly. While I'm not terrified of dying, I don't really want to walk right into death, either. Online shopping FTW.

No. The number of mass shootings per year has remained steady since 1980, and violent crime in general is near historic lows. Meanwhile, the US population increased 40% over that same period.

There's been a couple mall shooting in Toronto this year. Some thug shot into a crowd trying to settle some score with his target at a food court over the summer. Hit a few bystanders in the process. At another mall a month or so ago, shots were fired during a jewelry store robbery. Mall was busy at the time too. Fortunately nobody was hurt. They caught the first guy but haven't found the robbers yet.
I'm not worried about it. These incidents are still rare. My odds of dying in a car wreck are far greater than dying in a shooting. You can't let things like this worry you, or you'll die from worrying.
As for the random mass shootings lately, I think we still don't take mental health seriously enough in North America. A lot of these nutters go undiagnosed because few people know the warning signs. Even when they do get diagnosed, few get help. There's just not enough mental health facilities to accommodate them. When they closed down the asylums through deinstitutionalization, they were all released into the community. It was assumed community-level programs would take over. The problem is they didn't, and it also placed too much trust on the patient. The expectation that they would continue treatment and take their meds. A lot of these people ended up homeless, and more are a danger to the general public. So when I hear about the recent shootings or the subway pushers, it doesn't surprise me. There needs to be major reforms to make sure these people get treated in a timely and dignified way, before they hurt anyone.

Another issue is the people who are considered "nuts" are let off easy because they are "nuts" so they are put back into society and go do it again. I don't care what issues they have, if they are killing people they need to be locked up. I'm sure a software pirate would not get off as easily under that clause.

I live in Portland, and I'm not letting the gunman change my Christmas shopping strategy. Granted, I'm completely done with Christmas shopping and I got everything online... but still.

Nope. I have a better chance of dying on the way to the mall in a car accident than I do getting shot, so I'm not worrying about it.
