Game for girlfriend and I

I am loooking for a good game we can play on my HTPC that we can play together. Maybe a network game two be played between 2 systems.

Very broad/vague, but I am open to all ideas.

Trine's minimum requirements seem to be met by your HTPC's specs, so if it works (Steam has demos) I'd definitely recommend both Trine 1 and 2. Fantastic co-op game that has local multiplayer (it's a side scroller so no split screen needed).

Another would be Rayman Origins.

I've played some point and click adventure games with my wife, using the HTPC. Curse of monkey island, the original remake, Puzzle agent. Low system requirements and she enjoyed the art, story, humor, puzzles etc.

Try Sam and Max, especially the first season. Some puzzles, not too difficult, and a great sense of humor.

Diablo 2 is a really cool coop game. Diablo 3 is a far lesser game, but still OK fun I guess.

I hear that Borderlands is pretty cool co-op.

What type of game style/level of play are you looking for? Are we talking Super Smash-brothers? Or are we talking about Neverwinter Nights 2?

What kinds of games is she into? There are all kinds of good co-op games, but there's no sense in recommending a shooter if she doesn't like FPS games.

I played Borderlands I co-op with my grandson who was about 12 at the time (yea, I am that old). I started out a few levels ahead of him because basically I suck and he doesnt. Was great fun.

I second this. Recommend a controller or two though. I think lara croft guardian of light also has local coop.

Borderlands coop always turns out funny and I usually have a blast.

Also GTA IV multiplayer is also awesome, and it suits your purpose even more

This I second. The Lego games are quite fun. And you can co-op and you can even sometimes mess with the other player. Plus, Star Wars and Batman and LOTR and Indiana Jones. What's not to love?

If OP goes this route, he'd hit a home run with Ceville - a humorous point and click adventure in medieval setting with great voice acting (I think released in 2009) that can be had for only $1 in an indie bundle (Worms Reloaded is also available in this bundle):

If this girlfriend doesn't play games normally, I wouldn't recommend Trine or any other platformer - jumping and moving is extremely difficult for a gaming newbie. Even a game as seemingly simple as Super Mario Bros. would be difficult for the uninitiated gamer that isn't a child. Try something like Puzzle Bobble (aka Bust a Move): move the arrow left or right and press a button to shoot a bubble. That's about as easy as it gets:

There are many clones of this game as well, some of them free.

Bomberman is another one that has simple controls w/ no jumping. Just up, down, left, right and press a button to set bomb. Easy to get used to and there are many versions of this game (Sega Saturn, SNES, Genesis would be a good place to start)

I got my wife into video games with Borderlands so that would be a good place to start. If you can, setup another computer as that will greatly increase your options for co-op games. Not much split screen to be had on the PC, or even on consoles for that matter.
