They are not illegal. They are just undocumented workers. Huge difference!

I nominate Ford Heights, IL as location for one of these Apple 'Made in USA' assembly points. That town can certainly use the work...

I am going to guess that Apple won't be using illegal immigrants.

Then don't complain about jobs being shipped overseas.

Probably, but $10/hour screwdriver plant jobs are better than no jobs.

Chuck Harder used to say the factory of the future will have two employees, a man and a dog. The man's job is to feed the dog, and the dog's job is to keep the man from touching anything. Still, this is progress, how a society gains wealth. Outsourcing these jobs (no matter how they are done) is how a society loses wealth.

Lenovo is doing the same, but they are open that it will be a small facility in NC to handle customers with unusually long lead times to product...who knows what scale apple is talking of, I am betting production numbers will be small compared to their overseas operation.

A lot of manufacturing in the US is now so high tech that relative to the amount of product made the jobs are very few.

Those with capital will retain even more of their capital. Looks bad for the average working stiff. Won't even have work houses for them. I know, they'll go back to school and get a degree in programming, or astral physics. Then they won't be losers ( I mean takers) anymore.

I kind of laughed when I saw part of his interview this morning... he said something along the lines of "Parts of the iPhone is already made in the US! Like the CPU!".... LOL that cracked me up. You mean the CPU Samsung makes not Apple? But on topic, props to Apple for doing something like this.

I can't stand Apple, but I can put aside my contempt to be glad for this announcement.

More jobs for Americans is a good thing but the regulations still need to be cut which hurt businesses and prevent more jobs

Good for Apple. This is great and a leadership role for them, I hope they get lots of good play on this. The jobs don't have to be million dollar jobs, there was a decision here to creat some American jobs here that could be done for less outside the country. Even if it were for pr, which it doesn't sound like, it still has backbone and is already in affect... Not just words.

That facility has been open for a few years now... They are just adding more volume. I think it is more impressive that Lenovo, a Chinese company has been the only one doing it here since Dell closed it's final assembly hub in Winston-Salem.

Final assembly is mostly BS... Final assembly means memory and drive... That is pretty much it. This is strictly a PR move for Apple.

This is pretty true, but as incomes rise overseas some of these jobs will come home as the benefits of overseas labor diminish. It's not all doom and gloom, we just have to make sure the US continues to produce competitive workers and remains very good place to do business.

do you really think americans are going to live i dorms, eat cafeteria food, and work 16 hour shifts 7 days a week for $100 a month in order to make your ipads? they arent. if you even axed lazy axe americans to make you an ipad their union would call a strike. look at what happened to hostess. they destroyed that company for being asked to watch cupcakes bake. that is why those jobs BELONG overseas. its the best thing for the corporation, for americans consumers and for whoever has to do the work. anyone with any sense ought to be demanding "made in china/mexico etc..."

I don't think the price of a mac will be the issue.
Not for those that buy mac's.

I think there could be plenty of medium skilled blue and white collar jobs that may be trickling back to the US over time.
