Oh man its been hard to pull myself away from this game after starting earlier today.
All of the positive posts from our friends across the pond are spot on for their praise of this game. After the brief hand holding that occurs at the start of the game once you're unleashed upon the island to play how you want it really epitomizes the open world sand box style type of game.
I've been having a blast just hunting the different animals and starting to craft the different pouches and wallets necessary to hold more gear. It's the random things like gun fights happening in the distance, allied/enemy patrols, animal attacks and wild dogs feasting on the dead that add to the atmosphere. Graphically I'm playing with ultra settings on the rig below and it runs like glass.
My biggest fear of this game coming in was that it would have that same annoyance that Just Cause 2 had in that once you were spotted by the enemy there was no losing them. It was like they planted a tracker on you and could spot ya a mile way no matter how hard you tried to evade them. Not the case here in Far Cry 3. Although I'd like to believe I'm skilled in taking the stealth approach, there are times where I've been spotted but have been successful in losing my tail by either ducking in a cave or just hiding in dense foliage.
The enemy doesn't have the super human ability to always know where you're at and will often lose sight of you but they will still continue to actively look for ya. All the while taunting you and making the whole experience quite tense at times. If you are able to stay undetected the knife kills are really satisfying.
I never played Far Cry 2 but from what I've read in the past one of the biggest complaints of that game was the constant spawn of enemies after you cleared out a checkpoint. The way its handled here is when looking at the map of the island you'll see a shade of red that covers the area still under control of the enemy. This is caused by one of the enemies base camps in that area. Once you clear out a camp it stays yours and you'll notice the shade of red dissipate on the map and the overall enemy patrols in that area are reduced dramatically and allied units will now patrol there more frequently.
Being able to upgrade the weapons with silencers, red dot sights etc. and even give them some camouflage paint jobs is a small but welcome addition too. So far I'm only a few hours in and have only secured 1 radio tower and 2 camps, but overall I'm quite pleased with this day one purchase.

So....in this game I'm hunting deer with an AK-47.
I'm not sure if that's awesome or not.

The sharks have me terrified to go in the water. I kinda have a fear of water in games, and any time I find myself having to go in the water in this game it takes me a solid 5-10 minutes just to get myself to jump in, and this is even in places where I know there are no enemies underwater. I'm probably playing the wrong game haha

I was eager to get home from work to start playing. No dice.
Crashes right away at the splash screen, each and every time without exception. System is in sig. Fresh install and drivers, tried every trick in the book, it's the only game that gives me problems. I'm really in the mood for a rant but I'll try to be constructive instead:

Even if dx9 worked, that's not what I paid for. Bought it today, I'm guessing I can't get my money back and I have no clue how to fix it.

wtf is going on? I'm at the very first part getting out of the camp and the part when you have to throw a rock at the second two guards I die every time. The guy just moves after I throw two rocks and gets killed every time. I've tried like 10 times already.. what am I missing?

Why are you throwing two rocks? And are you throwing them at the marker?

One rock does nothing. So I throw another one. And yes at the marker. The guards get kinda distracted then my guy moves and dies.. every damn time.. wtf I've tried it like 20 times now.
Ok I'm done.. I've literally died at this same spot 5 minutes into the game 30+ times.

Game has it's bugs, but I got it up and running in full glory today. I like how you can realistically use the shrubbery as cover. Shaping up to be fun.

You know, I am on version 1.0.2. Maybe you need an update.

Does the pile of white rocks that appears go away after you throw? You need to hit that spot, it will go away when you hit it

Limited time to play tonight but I wanted to get the introduction\hand holding out of the way.
2700K@ stock speed (I know...I haven't gotten around to over clocking yet)
GTX570@ stock speed
Latest beta drivers
Started up the game at 1920x1200 (native resolution of my monitor)
Set video settings to ultra.
Game is playable but will probably look at adjusting the settings to smooth things out.

Played for about 3.5 hours tonight. Definitely GOTY material for me. Most fun I've had gaming in a long time. My only complaint is that the interface seems clunky at times. During conversations the camera floats all over the damn place, and the interaction points on animals and other objects seem a bit finnicky. But those are very minor complaints about an otherwise glorious game.

lol this game is funny sometimes. I went out hunting for dingoes, 2 minutes later I had 4 dead gang members, and a dead black bear and cassowary. No dingoes yet.

Just when I didn't think it could get any better, it did. Just got through a few major missions and wow, they really got a game of the year at the least. For me, this is possibly a game of the decade. It is already one of my all time favorites. I can't think of a better game actually. Really, the creativity of some of these missions is really far out there.

Far Cry 3 can not win game of the simply because the player character saying "Leeza" makes me want to kill myself.
If anyone names their child Leeza instead of Lisa they should die in a fire.

Anyone else think the guy who voices Triumph The Insult Comic Dog did the voices for some of the NPCs?
It makes me laugh!
Especially when they say ridiculous things like "Man, it really itches...I should have worn a rubber!" in his voice.
I keep waiting for one of them to say "...to poop on!"
