Default AllthingsD: AMD Prepares for January Layoffs

http://allthingsd.com/20121116/amd-p...more-job-cuts/

For those unaware:
1100 workers cut in 2009
12% global workforce reduction in 2011
15% last month
and more coming this January.

This company is completely mired in its own shit, and through the years of repeated cuts and layoffs, they fired or drove away all the talent, and only the drecks who are totally incompetent and can never find a job elsewhere are left.

[Heart] AMD.

if you don't create a good product that people buy, you don't deserve to stay in business.

Nice first post.

They can't create a good product because they have morons in all levels of senior leadership and management.

I like AMD cpu speed doesn't matter anymore these days.

I remember for a brief period that Hector Ruiz had as much of a fanbase here as Danica Patrick. lol.

Does Viditor still even post here?
Does Crampital still comment on Intel/AMD articles on Anandtech/DailyTech?

Interesting how their fanbase has all of a sudden disappeared.

This was predictable, in fact, I said the merger would fail to do a single thing for either company back in 2006. AMD bet big on going into video rather than keeping up with the times and going mobile. What a waste. So much shareholder value destroyed all for Ruiz's ego.

AMD is going fine on the server side but they're dropped the ball on their consumer products. Especially concerning CPUs. They had the fastest processors for years until Intel turned around and released the Core 2. That was six years ago and so far they haven't delivered an impressive non-GPU product since. Their one saving grace is the CPUs are much cheaper than Intel's while still offering reasonably decent performance. That's what drives me to keep using AMD systems. You get more bang for your buck on the low and mid range.

They're going through a pase of restructuring now. They're certainly no RIM, teetering on the edge of oblivion. They do need to get their act together and jump into the mobile market. Not only that but what they deliver needs to be better than what Apple, Samsung, and nVidia are offering. They need to get Fusion in a cell phone or tablet pronto.

Crappy products stemming from a problem with crappy management.

This is what happens if you put out of touch old people in positions of power with illusions of grandeur and not reality.

It was Centrino that turned the tide for Intel. They couldn't keep up the P4 line and still deliver a cool/fast/efficient processor, Centrino fixed all of that and destroyed AMD.

But you also have AMD's problems.

They are getting close, obviously if they have engaged an investment bank to determine strategic alternatives they are having a massive amount of problems.

Is their GPU business still based in Ontario, Canada? Wondering because ATI was based in Markham, haven't heard anything about them moving.

AMD x86 Market Share

Trinity sucks and no on gives a shit. The tablet version has only one published design win so far: Hondo Z-60 Fujitsu

That thing will never leave japan.

AMD GPU market share
GK104 > GCN shit. AMD is focusing on compute performance for mainstream consumer GPUs when the demand doesn't exist. Who cares if Tahiti has better compute, the question the consumer asks is can it play BF3. or <inset game>. They canned the 7990s (dual GPU card) because it was a piece of shit with negative scaling.

And actually AMD is much closer to oblivion than RIM...

Whats a dreck?

On a related note, you seem to have a great deal of anger towards AMD. I'm guessing you were one of the rejects, or a major intel fanboy. Either way, lighten up a little.

It's the engineers that develop the products. Are you guys who blame management saying that they are nixing better products?

They should open the specs to all their products, and let the Linux guys play. That'll build some good will, and get a few more customers. Not enough to save a company, but anything helps. It won't make the ship sink faster, that's for sure.

.
I've always thought that Intel's use of their market position to keep big companies like Dell exclusively Intel, even though AMD was beating the P4 in both performance and price, crippled AMD for the long term. Sure, they eventually stopped that and got a 10 figure judgement, but by that time Intel had already taken back the lead, especially with notebooks. If AMD had been able to actually capitalize on their price & performance leads during those years, AMD could have invested more in fabs and RD, as well as actually gain consumer recognition. Hell, they could have afforded tv ads to tell consumers that they were faster.
