Well, glad I held off on spending 5g on the guild back item. It does suck about accessories/trinkets though, since I spent at least 15-20g across my 2 toons crafting the right mix of power/vit/crit/precision.

That's actually a relief, backpack and rings I can live with. It was too early to invalidate all the armor/weapons everyone's been working for this whole time, glad they didn't go that route.

I could have done without the reminder of those damn Mursaat, though. I actually ALMOST BEAT that level even without Spectral Agony. Over and over I tried it, getting very deep into the map... finally giving up and realizing I had to do another mission to survive Spectral Agony. Not fun times...

This game does need new lvl 80 zones, but I can only imagine the amount of work needed to come up with all that content. Something without any Risen. At least Frostgorge and the CoF map have different enemy types other than just the dominant enemy (Icebrood, Flame Legion).

well, I did read more.

the plan is to indeed offer full sets of Ascendent armor. At some point. Maybe soon? I have no idea.

Definitely don't want this heading to the gear treadmill that they promised to avoid...at least, not a few months out. It seems way too soon to be adding that.

That being said, there appears to be a lot of new content, which is good--and FREE. the blog post also said that some of the new gear will be "complimentary" during the release? Not sure what that means...

Good article on GW2 Guru about this, basically Anet didn't anticipate players getting maxxed exotic gear this quickly, and that the gap between exotics to Legendaries is galactic... Players wants something to work towards that isn't necessarily a year away, hence Ascended gear.

Not a fan of the name, it smacks of GW1 nonsense but thus far in the game Anet really has done no wrong. They've earned my benefit of the doubt.

Also, Guru had a screenshot of an Ascended ring compared to a regular exotic, the stats are almost inconsequentially improved. We're talking, 5 more points in power or precision. I'm only referring to the stats, obviously. The big question mark will be the defensive/offensive upgrades, which the screenshot doesn't show. No idea what these will do yet so will wait and see.

i've kinda given up on this game after leaving stormbluff isle. the friends i transferred to play with quit playing like... a week after i transferred.

will SI ever open back up or is it going to be full/closed for good?

Just have to keep checking. My friend got lucky and was able to transfer before going to work at like 6am last week. He had tried for the day prior multiple times with no luck.

Gear statflation is always met with mob statflation resulting no overall increase in character power and that is only after grinding, I seen it enough in WoW and by almost every MMO ever and don't want it here especially when the design goal of this game is to eliminate gear treadmills. Thinking about it Anet purpose for this new tier of gear is a tactic to pressurize players to buy more gems to reskin their new Ascended gear.

pretty much. you see it with all of their noodling with the market. I don't really blame them for it, as it is their model. I seriously don't buy their argument that this new tier is a reaction to people getting Legendaries far sooner than they ever imagined. Really? Come on, that's maybe 1 or 2% of the population right now. Most people certainly aren't going to try, at least not grind for it.

You always have that population that is going to max level in a weekend, then grind their asses off. I imagine many of them set up bots to farm ore in the first week or so before that became a big issue. Or, as per ANet's desires, simply purchased legal gold and bought a significant chunk of the mats they needed. Some were able to exploit early glitches with the forge and pump out a stack of Dusks, now going for 300g each. Never underestimate the dedication of the jobless gear-grinders out there, ANet.

Ironically, if the Ascended stuff indeed go through there will be no happy winners in the end, the hardcore legendary-wielding gear treadmill special snowflakes would quickly acquire and complain Ascended is too easy to get while pissing off the vast majority because their effort to acquire and reskin exotics becomes wasted.

Is there a database of all the exotics and legendaries available? I was under the assumption that they were marginally better and just provided something extra to do.

guru has a few consolidated threads on various exotic skins (mostly obtained randomly through the forge or drops) and a good list of legendaries and recipes.

I believe the legendary thread is stickied. I think Wiki also has a page on legendaries that is now well-documented.

bear in mind that for any exotic that exists (outside some of the dungeon gear that has unique stat combos--like the AC gear with power, toughness, vitality), you can craft the identical pieces when you max whatever necessary crafting profession.

I am finding that the expense of crafting exotic jewlery is just, just, way too much for a marginal improvement over the rare jewelery (which already requires 3 ecto each--wtf?)

I will be sticking to rare (or maybe just master) and heading straight to ascended, depending on the details of how it is obtained.

I would say that if you don't already have exotic jewelry, that you are best in waiting to see what the new stuff does. I didn't find that the exotics cost too much. Really the most expensive part was the ore. Ecto really isn't that hard to farm once you hit lvl 80 (heck, go kill the 3 dragons and you are pretty much guarantied to get at least 1-2 rare drops which can either be sold if they are worth more than 1 ecto, or salvaged with a chance of 1-3 ecto).

i tend to be lucky with ecto, and usually get 2-3 when salvaged. But I also recently got into the habit of tossing stuff into the forge, as I've had some decent luck recently.

Do exotics give a better chance/number of ecto over rares? Or is it generally just better to sell them?

not likely. I only booted people that had "unknown" status as their location, which means they haven't logged in for quite some time.

And I actually left quite a few of those in, because they were quite active before and I know they've hinted about coming back from time to time...mostly people whom I recognized.

Thing is, we have more than enough space in the guild and there was never any intention of it not being a casual place.

But it would be nice to get a nice injection of regulars that are keen on some dungeon diving and actually willing to converse in the chat log.

There are still up to 15 or so people on at times, but generally only 3 or 4 of us aren't shy.

It was exotics they said were too easy to get, not Legendaries. And they're right, full exotic gear took me about 6 or 7 weeks tops. There's nothing wrong with that, necessarily... I simply rolled a Guardian and kept going on my merry way. I will never be able to get a Legendary at my current pace so better off going with alts since I'm interested in the other classes...etc.

To be fair, my first reaction to the Ascended gear announcement was that I felt gutted for having dumped almost 10G into exotic accessories which provided only marginal improvement over the masterwork accessories I already had. The reason I did that was because they were the best, the "end game gear". Nothing better. I rationalized that the investment now was a one-time only thing. So it's safe to say I was not pleased to hear of the recent changes.

I'll wait and see, this does not smack of a money to me but again, time will tell. Even if it was, there's no monthly fee, and you're not forced to get Ascended gear nor are you forced to run this new content that requires it. It's all gravy at this point.

ah, exotics. that makes sense....but why would they think that would take so long to get? All this could be done with relatively easy crafting?

I know there were some serious balancing issues with crafting from the start (well, jewel was always and remains pretty easy and quick), but the ease was built in from the start.

Legendaries are a very different animal.

That's just a lame argument because you aren't forced to acquire exotics do play either. The real problem is in people with ascended gear they will have a small but undeniable stat advantage in WvW because they can grind gear like a second job and not because they are better players which is a symptom of like every MMO ever, and I speak this as a college student with tons of free time to burn. At least the game in its current state doesn't allow this to happen because exotics are easy to get and the stat ceiling was supposed to there for a loooooong time. Both won't be true when ascended gear hits.

Game balance in WvW over a negligible increase in stats is the least compelling argument I've heard so far regarding this update. I believe Arenanet is already on record as stating this change will have no effect sPVP, and since WvW is intentionally unbalanced by the very nature of it's design, well I think you get the picture.

As for gear progression, the system currently in the game is already inherently unfair and this update does nothing to change that. If I have 10 hours to play each week and it takes me 2 months to reach level 80... and my gear is all lvl 75 blues when I get there then it's unfair that other people are wearing full exotics. There's always somebody that gets left out in the cold.

Bottom line - This is free gear, in a free content update, for an AAA quality MMO without a subscription fee. Is it too soon to introduce something like this? Absolutely I think it is. But I was more angry when they switched around the skills on the Guardian Greatsword a few weeks back. I'm being completely serious by the way, you don't mess with people like that!

And you think people didn't complain about the difference between blues, green, yellow and orange?

People put up with it because at least there was an end in sight and it wasn't that time consuming.

Now they basically said that the finishing line can be moved whenever the "stat progression crowd" feels bored and need some more stats.

So any player that isn't 1 character only (main character is a word with no meaning in the GW franchise until now) will have to regrind stats for all the characters already at max.

Also, Anet already boosted dungeon gains and karma gains via daily and monthly achievements that reward jugs of liquid karma (1 jug for daily, 15 for monthly) that gives 4500 karma a pop.

It really doesn't take long if you just ran some dungeons as well. Seriously, even with just 1 character, running all paths of just 1 dungeon, you can get a piece of armor every day. If you ran 2 dungeons, well, that is 2 pieces. At most it should take a week to have full exotic armor, 10-11 days for armor and weapons. Now, say you have 2 characters that can run a dungeon, well cut that time in 1/2...

Seriously, it doesn't take long for full exotic gear. Once you add in the income you make in the dungeons, in that same time you should be able to afford to purchase exotic accessories, or the parts to craft them (AC you make 41s per path, not counting drops, so figure 1.5g for running the 3 paths, and to craft an exotic ear/ring/pendant it costs about 2g if you buy all your mats, so you need about 10g, which you would have in 7 days of dungeon running, which you would have done anyway for the other pieces of gear).

I really love GW2 it's a shame they are changing their core design to add in gear treadmill and power creep. I simply don't see any way around it, it is what it is, biger stats. My only explanation is simply pressure from NCsoft. I think the way they are rolling out the ascended gear speaks to this 2 slots at first and a slow rollout of more slots and ways to obtain the inflated gear. It's a delicate approach to something I feel Arenanet was forced into, obviously the player retention and concurrent active players isn't where it needs to be. I don't feel like this approach will cause people from all the other gear driven mmo's to give gw2 a try. Raiders gonna raid.

It's such a shame that this wrench was thrown into an otherwise epic content patch including a new zone a new dungeon and a new spvp map

Seriously, it doesn't take long for full exotic gear. Once you add in the income you make in the dungeons, in that same time you should be able to afford to purchase exotic accessories, or the parts to craft them (AC you make 41s per path, not counting drops, so figure 1.5g for running the 3 paths, and to craft an exotic ear/ring/pendant it costs about 2g if you buy all your mats, so you need about 10g, which you would have in 7 days of dungeon running, which you would have done anyway for the other pieces of gear).
That is actually with the semi-recent dungeon update, though, to counter the shard run exploitation.

It used to be that the token drops were random amounts (no more than 15 iirc, as few as 0) from each chest along the path (and the final reward, which was the same mechanic).

There was no DR, so you could run the same path over and over with the same average drop, but this meant that instead of 3 runs on 3 paths for 1 piece of armor (today's rate), you had to run an average of 6-8 paths to get one piece. The reason they changed this was because of players exploiting the shards in Arah--8 or 10 minute runs to open 2 chests, quit, reset, run again. People were getting hundreds of shards doing this. I only went with Hak a few times and I think I have about 40 shards from those ~4 or 5 runs. I hated the wonky jump puzzle one had to do to make that run.

So, I think the ascended implementation was part of the strategy to counter these exploits. For whatever reason, they figure people are exploiting to get exotic faster than intended, so....let's fix the exploit and just make exotic easier overall....and then again complain about exotics being too easy? Yeah, I don't get it, which is why I don't buy this argument that they put forward.
