pretty much any good sci-fi novel will have more realistic and epic battles than what you see on the screen. and if said novel gets turned into a movie/tv show, it's also guaranteed that the same scenes turn into your generic pew pew star wars esque battle scene. sfx artists just think that way.

Coruscant - uh, tactics of pulling alongside each other and shooting until one wins? Hasn't that tactic been improved upon in the past few hundred years? (Well, ignoring "a long time ago in a galaxy...")

I fell asleep several times trying to watch the SW movies, can't remember much of those 'battles'. But if they were as 'good' as the rest of the SW movies it's no wonder I can't remember them.

I'm glad to see Stargate wasn't forgotten on that list. The Replicator homeworld battle in particular is just a blast to watch (and I'm so very glad the series was released to Blu-Ray).

I always like the opening scene for the book Starship Troopers, tho not really a battle but more like a raid.

Stargate: Atlantis was the most visually stunning use of HD on a tv show I have ever seen. Bright, vibrant colors. Very few murky scenes. I think the show doesn't get enough credit for this. It's a virtual showcase for HD.
I think part of my dislike for Stargate: Universe was the drab and dreary colors that just depressed the heck out of me.

Especially when shooting "lasers" at each other. I guess you've got to close to a few hundred meters before your laser blast peters out and becomes useless.
Don't fire until you see the white shells of their R2 units!

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Gurren Lagann the movie. What other space battle has giant robots literally throwing galaxies at each other like throwing stars, or attacks where they trap the characters inside of a separate multiverse?
