Georgian immigration laws create new problems to solve one's that don't exist.
http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2012...ors-and-nurses
This is some exquisite schadenfreude. Conservatives enact immigration laws requiring a citizenship demonstration to renew professional licenses while slashing the staff that processes those licenses. The result is hundreds and hundreds of licensed professionals unable to work in their professional capacities, and no apparent effect on any supposed illegal immigration.
Marvelous.
Edit: the apostrophe in the topic title is Swype's fault, not mine.

Just goes to show how it works out when you rely on FUD to create an emotional reaction to drive legislation instead of rational thinking.
I have no pity for them.

Or something like that.

Sounds like its an issue with a lack of planning to deal with the submission of all these applications rather then the law itself. The state should hire more temp works to help process these applications and the problem will eventually right itself. They should also extended the grace period for submission and then they can go back to normal staffing levels once the majority of workers have been processed as legal citizens or residents able to work in Georgia.

Why should they hire temps? They had staff that they fired.
The people of Georgia voted for it, they can live with it. Well, without nurses maybe some of them won't, but that's what they wanted. Its typical knee jerk legislation that makes ignorant people feel good, so fuck them.

How many illegal immigrants in Georgia are licensed doctors, nurses and pharmacists?

To cover the shortfall in workers processing professional licenses? That seems fairly obvious.

if they don't have the money due to budget cuts to keep the workers they had what makes you think they have the money to hire temp workers to replace them?

They may not have money to keep people on for the rest of their lives due to budget cuts which is true.
However I'm pretty sure they can and could hire a bunch of emergency temp workers for as long as it takes to process the paper work and clear the back log or at least farm out the processing itself to subcontractor at a lower cost. This is in addition to extending the grace period to coincide with their delayed processing speed.

Guess you never read the article, Ducati, or you'd have read this:
Quote:
|
Donald Palmisano Jr. executive director of the Medical Association of Georgia, says the law fixes a problem that never existed — at least not among doctors. "We're not aware of any undocumented immigrants that are physicians," Palmisano said.
|
Or this:
Quote:
For now, state licensing offices will keep plowing through the mail containing copies of passports and birth certificates, then checking them against a list of acceptable documents.
But that's where the vetting ends, confirms Kelly Farr and Lisa Durden of the secretary of state's office. The law says nothing about making sure the documents are genuine. "We really don't have a way to do that," says Durden.
State officials say the new document requirements haven't uncovered any undocumented immigrants.
|
So, no undocumented illegals have turned up being licensed as anything in the state, despite the new regulations. And nowhere was the issue addressed for making sure the documentation was GENUINE. Now that's a rather strange thing, isn't it? You want documentation to ensure the licensee is not an illegal, yet no one checks to make sure what documentation is received is genuine.
So, what's the purpose?
And given the vast shortage of licensed medical professionals in the state and nation, there's never been a problem for out-of-country MDs, RNs, etc., to get an extended work visa and a state license anyway. Never has been, never will be. So I fail to see what the law tries to do. (You do understand medical institutions across the U.S. routinely participate in foreign national employment drives overseas, right? The Philippines is one area constantly targeted.)

It's a good thing they weren't looking for illegal space aliens. Although it is the Republican Party and the next election is only year away......
