selling my car. need advice.

so I"m selling my car for the very first time and I need some advice. I plan to sell to a private party as I'm trying to get the most money off of it.

it is a 2011 Honda Insight, with very low miles, accident free. I live in Michigan.
- I went to NADA and got some values, so I plan to work my selling price off of that.
- I will get some pictures of my car inside and outside.
- Is auto trader the best place to sell my car? I went online and it looks like there is virtually no one selling my type of car. Is that a bad thing?
- I did get an extended warranty when I bought the car that extends to the life of my car loan (5 years). Does that get transferred over, and do you put that as a selling point?

Just need some guidance on where to go from there. How do you guys sell it? I will be leaving for a new job by mid december, so ideally I want my car out at that time. Is it usually the norm to post the car up for sale now, and say I can have it released by 'xx' date, or is it best to just post it and sell it?

Also, worse case, if I do need to sell to a dealer, are there any places that will buy my car, besides carmax (there is not a carmax in my area).

Craigslist is the fastest way. Don't bother with auto trader.

Yes, craigslist is also a place to meet a lot of people who:
- will call, make an appointment to show up, and won't;
- will take your car for a test ride, will say they like it and won't call again;
- or will call you multiple times asking the same questions while the answers are clearly posted in your 'For Sale' post;
- will low ball you no matter how harsh your ad language is about it;
- will offer payment plans or will try to trade in their junk car/bike/etc.

I'm actually leaving back to my home country, so I won't be taking the car with me.

Your going to need a mix of resources to sell this. Craigs, Trader, posters at the local supermarket. Here's the deal. A car that new will raise alarm bells. People will think its either a lemon or been in an accident. Be clear in your ad. State if there are accidents, offer to provide full documentation and proof of regular service.

Whatever you do, don't fall for any scams. Meaning if it sounds too good to be true, its probably bullshit. And make sure you have a friend with you when somebody comes to view / test drive. And remember if you have a loan, it needs to be paid off before you can transfer title. Talk to the lending company to find out your options for repayment. They might accept the buyer paying them directly with you present.

Carmax was a joke for me, as far as trade-in offers.

For the price, go to a site like auto trader and see what dealerships are charging for a model similar to yours. It can be over or under what you see in NADA (probably over since it's an Insight). Price yours slightly under that.

As mentioned above, Craigslist is full of crap, but may get you the fastest response. I would go with both myself.

If you're in a real rush, a Honda dealership is your best bet.
