Default My Kaspersky is about to expire, should I use MS Security Essentials?

Anyone here us MS Security Essentials? Is it as good as the paid products out there?

Probably not as good as some out there but it's worth trying to see how you like it.
I have been using it for a long time myself.

So you want to ditch the best Antivirus of the world with this crap so you save $20 USD or so?

I have said it many times but noone believes, MSE is one of the worst antivirus programs out there! Yes it is light on resources but it sucks big time in protection!

I have had 2 viruses crawl twice on to my system even though I am a safe user. Furthermore, it sucks in deleting any threats

Kaspersky has near-free deals all the time, like this:

If you use dropmyrights in conjunction with sandboxie then just about any AV will do.

Fry's usually has Kaspersky for free after rebate. I wouldnt touch MSE after having multiple machines get infected while using it.

This, where can I get it for $4? The free sounds good, except I hate dealing with rebates from anyone.

MSE may be OK while you're at home behind the security measures provided by your own router.

When you connect to the internet from anyplace else, say from school, coffee shop, etc., don't rely on MSE.

I use Kaspersky Internet Security on my personal laptop.

I keep watching LastLine for some new offering but don't see the right thing for me yet...someday!

If you can wait until black friday, Staples will have Kaspersky internet security for free after rebate or the Kaspsersky Pure 2.0 for $20 after rebate. I know you said you hate rebate but Staples rebates are easy and quick.

MSE doesn't find much these days. Kaspersky is much better, and is cheap, too.

After perusing the AV-test site, I will still use MSE for these reasons.

1) Light on resources.
2) Free.
3) Good enough.

You of course will have an issue with 3. I do not. Why? Well, it scores well in the more prevalent malware at 100%, making it the equal of everything else on the market. What it scores poorly in is "0-day attacks inclusive of web and e-mail threats." Really? People still get infected through clicking on attachments? I'll take that risk.

In fact, I didn't run AV until I started using MSE for Win7. I've only been infected twice in... ever. First time, someone else was using my computer when I was away and browsed to some iffy site. Second time an infected PDF was loaded through an ad on a tech site (not AnandTech, but probably well known enough) and the notebook didn't have an updated Adobe Reader. That notebook had not been used in well over a year and Reader was probably 2 versions old by then. Thus, I consider both those instances to have been avoidable. Oh yeah, that person who got my computer infected was always getting his own computer infected too.
