I'm in Boston. Where do I get good clam chowda?
In Boston for a few nights for work. I figure I might as well get some authentic new england clam chowder. Where do I go?
I'm staying at the W on Stuart st.
If not good chowder, then what? I want a decent restaurant with something local.

Keep in mind, this is a small fish market, not a restaurant. It's smelly and seating is minimal. You usually take it to go, or people eat them on outdoor seating on a beautiful summer day.
They also have amazing lobster roll.
If you want a nice sit-down restaurant, Neptune Oyster seems to be getting all the rave.

Barking Crab is also good, albeit touristy. Great seafood.
No-Name restaurant is good too on Seaport.
Union Oyster House is also good, supposedly the oldest restaurant in US (1826). Good seafood.
What I've listed are all great seafood.
McCormick & Schmick is a chain, but on Tuesdays, they have dollar oysters.. which are local (New England). Absolutely amazing. Google and call them (was it Wed?).
If you are into Asian food, Peach Farm in Chinatown has great seafood. They do a good ginger scallion wok-seared lobster.. MMMMMMMMMMMMM.
Shabu-Zen is a fav hot pot place of my GF & me. Great seafood selection there also.
Boston also has pretty good pizza. Uppercrust on Beacon Hill is good. Same for Pizzeria Regina.
Boston is a small walking city, so Chinatown, Beacon Hill, and Little Italy are all within 15 min walk (or just 1-4 stops on T).

If you don't mind a drive...
http://www.cabbyshack.com/
My wife stated that this is the best clam chowdah she has ever had, anywhere, bar none. Your spoon will stick straight up if you put it in the chowdah.
It was also featured on Food Network's "Best Thing I Ever Ate"

Find some fried Ipswich clams - a very memorable tasty treat I had last time I was in Boston.
Might also head to the N. End for some excellent Italian food and get a nice cannoli for dessert.

Noted for the future. I don't have 2 hours, nor a car. Work might wonder why I expensed a 2 hour cab ride.

I live 5 minutes from there...the food is awesome, but its popular among tourists and there is usually a wait. Every time I walk by there's a line out the door. Just FYI.

Well, I was gonna suggest you drive two hours north to Portland, but it sounds like you don't have a car or two hours. If you're ever up in the area, give me a shout and we'll find a beer.

I was just in Boston last week for a conference and stayed somewhat close to the W. I could recommend non-seafood places for you .
Also, I met a few natives that said good things about Legal Seafood. Any Bostonites care to confirm?

Legal Seafood is good. Chain, but legitimately good. It's just overpriced. You assholes coming to Boston need to visit NH/ME.

Who wants chowdah???
I actually make a mean clam chowder. I'd be interested to see how it varies from Boston to Maine. I make mine simple with heavy cream, potatoes, celery, onion, salt, pepper, and a bit of red wine vinegar.

Easy legal sea food. They've won the chowder award so many times they don't compete anymore.

In Maine, it's more brothy than creamy. Meaning a little bit of roux and whole milk instead of a more thickened half and half or cream. Mainers also add less of the ingredients that aren't in the name, i.e. if it's CLAM chowder, it's going to be mostly clam and very little potato. I prefer it Boston style on the base. Up here, everything falls to the bottom.

Also, if anyone's considering Maine, Eventide Oyster Co. in the Old Port (Portland) has some of the best I've ever had.

Uppercrust is garbage and the owners are crooks and scumbags. They owe $850k to their employees but instead of paying them, filed for bankruptcy.
Little Italy? LOL. The North End.
