How much of a bath should I take on this mistake?
Our microwave has been acting up, so I went out and bought a new one: a Maytag MMV5208WW. Got it for 258 + tax, pretty good deal. Got it home and it will be way too big for the one it is replacing. It will stick out another 2 inches and be about 1 inch closer to the range on the front edge.
I feel like an idiot for not thoroughly measuring the old one and looking for a similar size. If I install it, I will constantly regret it.
It is unpacked on my dining room floor. What is a good price to ask on CL? I'm seeing prices around 280, so I'm thinking 250???
stoopid...

Return it. If the store won't take it back, check with your credit card company about purchase protection.

Unless the B&M store has a non return policy, the unit has not been used and should be viable to return. They may have a restocking fee - that is legit in this case; eat that.
If it was an online purchase; put it up on Craig for $60 and see what happens.

I'm learning that almost all microwaves extend out past the depth of the counters, and vent out the top as opposed to the front. We have 12" deep counters, and this microwave sticks out around 17.75". The current one is flush. There are ones more shallow, but most are around 16". Store said they'd take it back.
Correction: Model is mmv5208wb

I assume you mean you have 12" deep cabinets. Going with that, mine are 12" deep (plus doors) as well and the microwave is 15", which looks fine and presents no problems. Some other models I see out there are about 15" as well, so hopefully one of those will work for you.

I would have just cut out the extra inch or two from the microwave.

You also need the overhang so the door can open without restriction.

Yes, 12" deep cabinets.
I guess the current one we have is rare by today's standards. Maybe we'll just have to get used to it. I'll just hang onto it, thanks.

Yeah I've got 12 inch cabinets. Apparently no one makes those anymore so there's only a couple of microwaves that fit.

Thanks, that makes me feel a lot better now.
I was seriously depressed last night and this morning thinking I screwed up so bad. Now I am ok installing it and justifying the appearance by saying that all microwaves come like that now.
Plus a beer or 4 won't hurt...
