7970 CF (Carbon Fiber Edition) Large pictures

Lost power at my apartment complex due to Athena, back at home with some spare time and an extra roll of carbon fiber wrap. I figure why not, also while I like team red, I do not like red things in my case (theme is black/blue). So, after 2 hours and a bit of handiwork, I present to you... the carbon fiber edition!

Start off with a base 7970 Ghz:


Looks good, time to trace out the lines:


Transfer the outline onto carbonfiber wrap:


Rushed the rough trace... mistake on test fitment! This is why you need to cut large! Measure twice and cut once...


Clean up the surface to ensure good contact:


This is going to be a pain:


Time to call out the big guns:


Can't seem to flatten out the wrinkles... any help here?

Came out a little rough, and I wouldn't compare it to any real auto shop's work, but it filled in a slow morning. And now there won't be a bright red video card inside my case. I would've actually preferred spraying the entire assembly black first to get rid of the red underbody, but I didn't want to void the warranty so I opted for a removable method. And hey, even if I'm not happy with the way it overclocks, I'm now happy with the way it looks.

For about $1 worth of carbon fiber wrap from China, it looks good... and this wrap in particular has a 3D feel to it, so even better!

I like the idea. It may have been easier to wrap the whole thing, then use a razor blade to cut after it is already on the card. All depends on how you usually wrap.

that's how i did my interior trim pieces - overlay the entire piece w/ the CF cloth, and then trim the excess...

If you ever revisit it, you could disassemble the shroud, remove the fans, and then paint the visibly red parts to black. Or, go ghetto and just use a Sharpie brand permanent black marker to color the red parts black.

I think the red color looked awesome,the ugliest card i ever owned was a evga gtx295.

The card was a eyesore but god was it a killer card but the card had more cons then pros and i don't remember keeping that thing long,sold that and the i7 940 as a complete rig.

How did you deal with curves? Wrapping the card was hard enough and it was mostly flat. I wanna do the trim pieces on my car but all the curves make it a nightmare.

well the broad sloping curves and mostly-straight edges were pretty easy to wrap. but i also had difficulties w/ sharp curves, corners, etc. basically it came down to trial and error (i bought alot of material b/c i figured i'd need excess).

also, i believe i used a slightly different material. mine did not have the same backer that i can see in one of your pics. was that stuff peel-n-stick?, or did you have to use spray adhesive? the material i used was an actual 2-ply carbon fiber weave on a non-stick backer, and so i had to spray my trim pieces w/ a 3M Super7 adhesive and then lay on the material.

The 3M Di-Noc stuff is a lot of fun. I have the interior of my case layered with the stuff. In hindsight I would of preferred to use the white instead of the black I used.

The stuff lasts forever as well. You can take it off, ball it up, and just heat it and it stretches out wrinkle free to be applied again.

Yeah the stuff is peel and stick. It's like less than $5 for a 12"x50" piece
