Default Wife needs new laptop

I'm getting pissed off at Dell.

Anyway, my wife's computer has pretty much had it. It is dieing frequently.

I want to get her a new laptop. 17" screen. And I want to pay less than $600. And I want Windows 7, not 8. That is the problem, Windows 7. Seems like anything I want is only available with Windows 8. The only thing left with 7 on it is left over stock with higher price points.

What can I do? I could get a laptop and install Windows 7 but I'd prefer not to.

Isnt there some kind of "downgrade" option when you buy a windows 8 computer to revert to Win 7?

Actually though, is windows 8 really that bad? With a touch screen, I think it is quite nice on a laptop. Of course, there goes your 600.00 price point if you want a touch screen.

But anyway, on a regular laptop or desktop, I would prefer Win 7, but to me Win 8 would not be a disqualifying feature. Just click on one tile and you are back to the normal desktop. Unfortunately there is no conventional strat menu, but there is some little library icon that gets in into basically windows explorer.

Edit: How mobile does she want to be with the laptop? If you want to carry it around much, 17 inches is going to be quite heavy and bulky. I just got a 15.6 inch dell for my job, and it has a very nice 1080P 15.6 inch screen, but that sucker is heavy. I am amazed how much more difficult it is to carry around than the 14 inch it replaced.

Any laptop that I ever bought, the first thing to do was to uninstall to clean out all the "Crapware", and then do a clean fresh install.

So I really do not see the problem.

This is for my wife, thus the reason I am not getting Windows 8. I don't want to give here a learning curve.

Ya, I might be best off just buying a cheap Windows 8 build and putting 7 on it. I have some licenses for 7 so I might as well use them.

Includes some AMD based laptops. Are they that bad? Or should I just get the i3 for $500. My wife basically needs a web browser and word processor. Nothing more.

The HP has some Models that have a wide Keyboard that is working similar to a full Desktop Keyboard. It is much more comfortable to deal with it than the often awkward irrational regular Laptop Keyboard.

Buy her a Lenovo, Asus or Toughbook if she's the cause of laptop mortality.

Very good advice there. If you can afford one, I would recommend a T-series Thinkpad... they are nigh-on indestructible...

Llano or Trinity AMD laptops are nice if you want to do some simple gaming and nothing really CPU intensive. The igp is not really adequate for high resolution gaming at high res IMO, but does not sound like she wants to do that. However, if I am reading correctly, that AMD that you linked is an E-series which is basically a netbook processor. I would definitely avoid that in a 17 inch formfactor.

I personally would stick with sandy bridge, although my original like does contain some Clarkdale (I would subtract those but the power search gets complicated ) Llano is not bad but from what I hear SB has better power management, in a laptop it can translate to less heating and more battery life.

Well, I have a friend with a Lenovo E525 with a A6-3420M Llano at 1.5-2.3GHz. It gets ~3-4 hours of battery on a 44WHr so I don't think its -that- bad... and if you need more battery life, you can get a 12 cell 87WHr for it...

The laptop is for a wife that want to use it and enjoy would care probably do not care what chipset is in.

17" is very nice for watching Media and if the person is Not a gamer the modern inexpensive Laptops do well even with the integrated Video. That said 17" is more of a desktop replacement and rather cumbersome to use as a portable deivce

I bough few HPs like this for friends that are using it as defined by the OP "My wife basically needs a web browser and word processor. Nothing more".

To save on expense and make it more portable I usually buy the HP 15.6" for under $500.

I have one, and equipped family members and some friends with similat Laptops and No one is complaining.

I know very well what every chipset can do, but I also know how to use this knowledge to my advantage and Not to get locked in "Chipset/Graphic Limbo" when it is Not needed.

That is nice. However if you watch carefully I think you can get an A6 llano new for 400.00 or less, but maybe only 15.6 inch. Personally I tend to avoid refurbs, but that is just me.

I do buy and sell old laptop but that is done on a sub $200.

I would never buy a refurb. Laptop, the cost saving is very low.

Unlike Desktops that us (enthusiasts) can easly repair individual components for fraction of the work/item cost, it can not be done with a laptop.

Beside outside cosmetics there is No way to know the real wear of a laptop, one simple Glitch wipes immediately the save on the Refurb. cost. A big first Glitch, or a second simple one usually puts the laptop into the "it does worth to repair status", and the thingie has to go.
