Use CPU-Z to verify. Screenshot it if you could.

As a buyer it is really hard to get ripped off on eBay, unless you make the mistake of sending feedback before you test. Even then, it is heavily slanted towards the buyer.
Use CPU-Z to verify, and/or also look at the CPU itself. I've never heard of compatibility issues between the 2500/2500K, but I guess it is possible?

Yup, not a K model. Best to consult with the seller about it. He may unintentionally or intentionally sold you a non K model.

That's a shame. I never really trusted stock photos. I would rather demand actual photos of the things that I'm buying with time stamp. Without the K you're losing a better IGP, HD2000 on the Core i5 2500 and HD3000 on the K version. Also, the overclockability which is the feature that most look forward to when purchasing this chip.

His recent negative feedback would have scared me away. You live and you learn. Hopefully PayPal sides with you since he did not provide his own photo.

I hate ebay. Bought a factory unlocked iPhone and got some software cracked phone that had issue with any sim card I threw at it, accept for AT&T sims of course ... Seller was supposed to refund me shipping charges and all I got back was what I paid for the phone .
Ebay has some pretty strict return time frames but as long as you're within that time frame you're covered by paypal/ebay if anything goes wrong. Forget about speaking with him and just get the return process started through ebay so you're covered.

Yeah that's a huge ripoff. You can buy the cheapest ivy bridge i5 and it will be faster than that i5-2500 and cost about the same brand new.

What's actually stamped on the processor? Does this match the numbers on the side of the box?

As for his recent negative feedback, it's nearly 18 months old... not overly recent

According to your screenshot, definitely not a K model. I have a 2500k & can confirm that my CPU-Z references a 2500k product.
PayPal should be able to help you get your money back. As mentioned above, we live & learn. Use this as a learning experience to pay closer attention to one's feedback moving forward.

Sorry to hear this. It sucks and is a pain in the ass, but you'll likely be taken care of if you do the foot work with ebay and paypal. Buyers will try to screw you as well. I have sold perfectly good CPUs and the buyer claims that it simply didn't work and they wanted their money back after they likely fried the chip themselves.

Well i filed a claim with Paypal...i also contacted the seller and here is a copy of his message back...
HIM- It is in fact a 2500k. I know that by how it looks u think its not. I had the same thoughts. I bought that new from newegg.com. Once installed i was able to see that was what I had ordered. If u install it u will see the same. And like i said i had it overclocked to 4.0 and was limited by my test board. With a better board and good cooling it could easily hit 4.6 and watercooling would more then likey see 5.0 and up.
ME-I have it installed with my Asus maximums mono and watercooling. The system settings is commingle up as a i5-2500. And it cannot be overclocked I truer the CPU is locked by Intel is what its saying. I also posted copies of my CPU info on anandtech forums and they all said its not a k series. This CPU is useless to me due to it being locked and UN overclockable.
HIM- Well either u r doing something wrong or have a board issue. I had it on both the gigabyte board and the asus maximus v formual board with no issues of overclock on either board. If i still had the screen shots from class i would send u them but that was 2 months ago's. I bought both boards to class for show of how different boards have different limitions. And r u sure that u r using the lga1155 socket board? Because i like said at home and even in class i have never had an issue other then the gigabyte limits to overclock.
that is about it......
My setup:
Asus Maximus IV Gen3/Version 2
128G SSD
Radeon 5770
Corsair Watercooling
Patriot Viper DDR3 RAM 18xxxHRZ
Windows 7 64bit
i can see by his "answers" that his is dodging my questions or nto even reading them...i stated in my first reply that i had a ASUS maximus IV Mobo...he keeps asking what kind of Mobo i have...

as others have said open it up look at whats printed on the IHS....
what about the box? what about the sticker?
what I'm saying is that ideally everything should line up:
- eBay listing
- Box/sticker
- Printing on IHS
- What your mobo detects

The only thing I can say is, look at the CPU. It will tell you on the CPU if its a K or not. Dont trust software. Software could be inaccurate. Look at the damn CPU if youre not sure. All the experienced people here know better. When there is a fairly big discrepancy like this, never trust software programs.
Obviously when you reboot, the bios should tell you as well but, since the software may be reporting what the bios is reading, you should still check the actual CPU.
Its kind of scary you didnt bother to look at the actual CPU before installing it to make sure it was what you purchased.
With all that said, it sure looks like its not a K model.

Yes, he's dodging you. He even slyly states it can o/c the few bins the 2500 (non-K) can, as if that makes it a unlocked multi-K cpu. Of course he had a 'test' board. At least report him and try for a refund.

Possibility:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930861
The mobo itself may also not be updating the CPU information that it sends to the OS.

I am kind of hoping that is the case but, OP should have looked at the damn top of the IHS on the CPU before installing it.

I have to agree, time to remove to cooler and take a peep. You'll have to do it to return it anyway. Photo the top of it and you can send that to Ebay and the seller as proof.

Also, your CPU-Z version is well over one year old. Not sure that matters but its worth finding out.
