Samsung 840 or 840 Pro

If you do a newegg search for "Samsung 840 Pro SSD", in the list of all the models, all the 840 Pros show as out of stock. If you then click on individual models, except for the 256GB they all still show out of stock, but the 256GB model switches to in stock.

amazon has the 256GB 840 Pro in stock, but it says may take 1 or 2 days to process. They also have the 128GB in stock, but not at a good price.

It's already shipped and I've got a tracking number for it. If you want it you should buy it now as they won't last long.

Now it changed to showing the 256GB model in stock (all the others are out of stock). I just ordered one.

You're forgetting 1 important thing, both 830 and 840 series have 3 years warranty while the 840 pro series has 5 years warranty.

I am considering these two drives as well. At first I was thinking get the latest one but from what I am reading here if I do heavy data copying to the drive I should go with the 830? I am a photojournalist and on a slow week I'll copy 5-10gigs of images to the drive and on a busy week it can get up to 50--100GB of data. Not all that data is kept obviously and then I delete half of that which makes even more writes to the drive. I have a older 2010 i7 macbook pro with intel 5 series serial ATA (3gigabyte link speed) so would the I even be able to reach the max speeds that the 840 has? I really appreciate any input on this.

Neither. I would buy the 830, while you can. There will be no real world difference between the 830 and 840 Pro more than likely.

By neither you are talking about the max speeds my macbook pro would be able to take in and out?

The thing that gets me is the 512gb 830 is more expensive that the 840 (non pro)..

The rated sequential write speeds for the models are:

250GB 840: 250 MB/s
256GB 830: 400 MB/s
256GB 840 Pro: 520 MB/s

If your computer only has SATA 3Gbps, then you will not see any speeds over about 270 MB/s. So you probably would not notice the difference between any of the three 256GB models.

But if you might upgrade to a SATA 6Gbps machine in the future, keeping the same SSD, then the 840 Pro may be noticeably faster. It is also more expensive, of course.

The 840 uses the less expensive TLC flash.

In terms of sequential write performance:

840 Pro > 830 > 840

In terms of endurance:

830 > 840 Pro > 840 (probably, there is some guesswork here)

In terms of warranty:

840 Pro > 830 = 840

Good point about upgrading but the way Apple is going now you can't upgrade drives as they are built in on the board which makes me think I will have this macbook for the rest of my life! haha

I'm not so sure. The most relevant metric to system responsiveness is the 4k read. On an 830 this is ~25MB/sec. jwilliams4200 just posted benchmarks from his new 840 Pro and his 4k read is ~40MB/sec - that's a ~60% increase. I definitely think that would be noticeable and worth the money.

I think most people that own a 830 paid more than $160.00 for it.

-so why begrudge someone buying something faster today for the same money .

-the 830 seems slower in most case's to my g2 raid0 and I can't remember a time I spent real money on slower electronics to replace a item. $160.00 plus tax or $ 5.00 doesn't matter.
the 840pro is much faster than my g2's ,so it should fit in with what I'm looking for ,which is one fast drive.

-even when the 830 came out people paid more money for it's non noticeable ? speed over the cheaper products at the time. Why was that?

Did you get the game in your box? I wanted this drive for the encryption. It has 256 bit encryption capability whereas the 830 doesn't. Battery life for laptop too as someone else said.
