Default so I watched Silence of the Lambs and Poltergeist for the first time this weekend...

wasn't that impressed?

Thought Se7en > Silence of the Lambs by a mile.

Poltergeist was fine until the half dead zombies started popping up out of the ground. I just started laughing at that point.

Top 100 scary movies my ass.

It was scary if you saw it when it first came out. A lot of movies dont hold up well over time.

But yes Se7en is > than (insert any movie here)

I don't think Silence or Se7en are 'scary' movies. More like a thriller at best, not even suspense.

If you want a scary movie, I'm a big fan of Mothman Prophecies. Holy hell. What Lies Beneath wasn't bad either.

Se7en/Silence are thriller for sure, even though Silence is thrown into the horror mix so often (don't understand why?)

Poltergeist was billed as a scary movie though.

Poltergeist scared the hell out of me when I was a kid. I still consider it one of my all-time favorites, even if it doesn't hold up all that well today.

Poltergiest is kinda silly by today's standards....but Silence of the Lambs, for real?

Which would have been fine if he was the main character throughout the movie, but he was not. Instead we got psycho bill.

You're right, SotL is best seen as a "Thriller," but it does fit the standard genre of "horror"--it evokes visceral, preternatural fears and discomfort. Content that explores "The Sublime," as described by Edmund Burke.

Some movies just don't age well if you didn't watch it at its period.

I saw the broadway Rent in 2009. It was THE #1 show of all time that everyone wouldn't shut up about. I didn't get the hype at all. But then I realized why:

-Rent came out in 90's when AIDS and homosexuality were a huge controversial topic back then. Everyone was curious and scared of the them. Everyone in Rent had AIDS and most were homos. Them living a bohemian lifestyle battling such diseases in NYC and going about the life drama was very attractive for 90's.

I saw it about 15 years too late, where all those issues aren't so 'hot' anymore.

Se7en is hands down still my favorite movie of all time. I loved Poltergeist back in its day, but I didn't find either scary.

Oh I suggest you watch Red Dragon. Now THAT is a motherfvcking thriller/suspense that got me gripped to my seats.

It's the prequel of Silence and came out way later in 2002. Edward Norton and Anthony Hopkins, ftw.

well, when he's the main character, we end of with Hannibal...which wasn't very good.

Also, check out Michael Mann's version:Manhunter. Filmed ~85? was the first appearance of Lecter on the Big screen. Interesting take. It's based on the Red Dragon novel (which was later remade into a decent HL flick with Edward Norton. That has Lecter as the main antagonist)

Actually, it was released wayy before Demme's take on Hannibal Lecter. The Red Dragon film is a remake:

Only one of them was good, and its Silence of the lambs.

You should really get around to watching good movies while the special effects are still convincing.

I think Poltergeist holds up exceptionally well as a scary movie. It's just that to modern braindead teenage movie-goers the definition of "scary" is "lots of blood". When writers and directors can't come up with a compelling storyline and suspenseful situations with genuine fright they just throw an extra couple of buckets of fake blood around and hope for the best.

I hated blair witch project and found it far scarier than poltergeist.

blood is not necessary for scare.

there was simply nothing scary about Poltergeist for me. GF said it would have been a lot scarier as a kid, with those 80's tv sets freaking you out.
