Virtualbox on Linux - BD playback on Windows VM possible?

I know it's supposed to be possible now to playback older BD titles under Linux, but hear there are still problems playing newer titles.

I was wondering if it is now possible to playback Blu-Ray movies under Linux by using Virtualbox and running a Windows VM? If so, is it smooth? How's the audio?

I would guess that it's possible since Windows, with the right software installed, would have the appropriate key to give to the drive to decrypt the data, but I can't comment on the performance.

I'd think it would fail the HDCP check. A good system is fast enough to decode all of that data in real time without hardware acceleration, but a legitimate Blu-Ray player is going to block it or reduce the output resolution to qHD.

I've never tried such but I also think HDCP will be act upon such calls. Other than that, playing ripped (read: DRM-stripped) ISOs in a VM is a relatively light task for today's hardware.

So you think the virtual monitor will fail the HDCP check?

Yes. The Virtualbox virtual video driver doesn't even have HDCP keys to the best of my knowledge.

So basically it's simpler to rip the movies and watch them unencrypted wherever you want than to get them working on a non-Windows PC? Figures.
