Final Fantasy VI is probably #1 game soundtrack of all time.
Few game soundtracks have been good enough to perform in live orchestra all over the world in their own event.
There are too many GOOD soundtracks to list and do them justice. Xenogears, Chrono Trigger, etc. But FF VI OST is just another level of epic masterpiece. The most memorable and moving music and scenes in gaming history. The character intros, the climatic overtures, the infamous opera scene that has been performed live all over the world, etc.

Don't recall the last time a crowd got that emotional over Halo or CoD or GoW... let alone JUST the music.

Grim Fandango on PC had a great jazzy soundtrack. Still one of the best. That was back when LucasArts used to make good games.

I always thought the music in metal gear solid was well done.

I thought Final Fantasy X had a very fitting soundtrack. Each area had music which was very well themed to the environment as well as the stage of the overall story at the time. And I can still hum the original Legend of Zelda overworld tune even though I haven't probably heard it in I don't know how many years.

speaking of zelda... Ocarina of Time. The game was all about the music, you even had to use the music to interact with the puzzles.

I totally agree with Nier and Xenoblade. They definitely have AMAZING soundtracks. Also Shadow of the Colossus, Super Mario Galaxy and Castlevania have great music too.

Castlevania: Lament of Innocence, now that you mention it, did have a really good soundtrack to it. Again the music was very well themed to the environment. It was sort of dark and oppressive when you're in the level with the sort of dark gothic architecture, then it changed to light and airy in the level that was like a garden, and when you're on your way to the final boss the music has a much faster tempo.
