I don't have a lot of turns into the demo, but 4-5 hours in and so far it plays like Civilization IV to me. At least in the 'barbarian' sense, lol I keep getting my ass handed to me by Warlock's version of them. Those vampire units are brutal!

I haven't figured out if I can build other units. You start out with a ranger which is like an archer, but I can't seem to build them again.

Didn't Paradox make Magica as well? That was a great, fun (and cheap) game.

So I know the first Elemental game was apparently a steaming pile (I didn't actually play it), but Elemental: Fallen Enchantress seems like it will actually be a legit good game AND be a faithful MoM successor. I currently find some of the empire management concepts in the game very confusing, but the game actually has heroes, equipment, and tactical combat!

It took me a little while to figure out the unit progression but after a few levels the Hunters you can build can be "upgraded" to Rangers by clicking on a gold star that appears on the bottom left unit info panel. Make sure you check each buildings unit list to see the progression.

I will say this, Halberdiers with Silver & Enchanted weapon upgrades slice through Vampires with ease, even some larger units.

Quick tip, you don't have to build the buildings, move all your units to end the turn, just press enter and it skips those steps.

Thanks for the tips, I will try them out next time I'm in-game.

Elemental was broken at launch, but they steadily improved it. I enjoyed it a great deal as it was an option to Civilization. I haven't tried out Fallen Enchantress, but if it turns out to be a typical StarDock game it should be substantial.

If you had the first Elemental then you probably can preorder and play the beta now at no charge.

Scratch what I said about Hunters > Rangers, you need the Training Ground Building and 120 Gold to upgrade them. 100 Gold to upgrade the Warriors to Veterans, they both also cost more in upkeep but gain a bit in Power & Health while keeping previous level up bonuses.

Watch out for Hunter Spiders, saw one do 43 damage to a city and take it over. Try to get as many of the "goody piles" as you can, got some Summon Earth Elemental spells from them before.

Fallen Enchantress is showing big signs of improvement, still not Sins level but much improved.

I try to explore, but everything gets slaughtered at some point or another. Maybe I need to expand faster, the base city doesn't seem very productive.

Yeah you can, I've downloaded it, but haven't had a chance to play it.

Quick review by Tom Chick here: http://www.quartertothree.com/fp/201...he-art-of-war/

I have a lot of respect for his reviews, he was one of the few honest reviewers that alerts gamers that soemthing is overhyped and crap (I remember he doomsayed MOO3 and Civ 5 while most fanboys were moaning "it will be fine after a patch or two!") Anyway he gives it a positive initial review, stating that the AI actually works and makes this purely warfare game good. Although on the forum he pointed out that the late game AI may not be up to snuff.

I've been playing it for about 2 hours so far. I did not get the demo so my opinion is fresh. So far I am liking it quite a bit. The Civ aspect is quite simplified and gives you very simple clear cut choices to make on how to progress. But it is not dumbed down like I believe Civ 5 was, it's just more streamlined like a classic 4X game such as MOO 1. The combat so far is pretty cool although I am just getting in to my first war now. We'll see in the near future how things hold up.

One problem though is that the game is repeatedly crashing for me, like every 30 minutes. Luckily it seems to autosave every turn so no big loss but hopefully it gets fixed soon.

Thanks for the heads up! For some strange reason I had to restart Steam to get it to let me download it.

Lol they already have a $2 DLC out. No shame!

Ordered and DLing now. Watched some YT videos and reviews. Looks good and the $20 price is very attractive.

Could be worse could be crusader kings II. They're really trying to milk the DLC gravy train with that. Kind of makes me sad : ( I'm probably going to wait till it's on sale even though it's cheap. I've got some other games and life occupying me decently right now.

In their defense at least, that DLC was free to people who preordered. Though, I agree day one dlc blows.

The game is great. I played it for over half the day yesterday, ugh.

have to also chime in.. never heard of game read here ( and the link ot the Quarter to 3) and after reading it got it. Started last night at 1o pm... had to shut PC off at 3Am (work at 6am).. dang.. not sying its anything new, but its done well, and the Enemy AI is currenlty entertaining me.. My brute force and Numbers has been countered with Sneaky and waht appears to be GOOD TACTICS!... I was pushing hard to my enemies city, had been using solid mix of melee and archers (all leveled up, leave that debate to others) and the brute force and numbers tactic to push to his city.. I was destorying everyting he threw at me.. but its like he lured me into a trap, he used fliers to basicly get behind me so once i was in waht appeard to be an easy kill... (he had crap in city and in waling distacne on map) his fliers cam in through MT's behind me and put m in a no win.. could fall back., but have almost nothing left after retreat.. or push ahead and inflict as much dmage as i could so we would both be in a rebuild stage.. Now i dont know how well the AI "thinks" but it was brilliant in my book.. he wasnt going to beat me head to head.. so he basicly trapped me in an area i had to fight one on one.. not gorup on group where unit vs unit matters.. excellent!

i like it!

I really enjoy the game, my favorite spell is summoning fire/earth elementals. Summon them in, upgrade them and they will unleash havoc

My normal tactics seem to work in the game, but that doesn't bother me any and I enjoy it regardless. My normal tactics are expand building more cities while keeping a fair size army on each of my borders. Then when I get as far as I can next to a rival, I en mass an army over there and simply crush them

The AI so far seems pretty good at defending its own cities but hardly ever goes on the offensive.

In defense of CK2 the game is humongous and the DLC is pretty much cosmetic (at least what I've seen. Has any new ones been announced?). You could play that game for years and not feel like you're missing anything. Not that that's a great excuse (ME3 DLC and all that), but the DLC doesn't add any gameplay anyway (yet).

And if there's anyone I don't feel filthy giving money too it's a company that's making hugely complex, historic grand strategy games set in the middle ages. Not exactly a crowded market.. I find it hard to blame them for trying to make some money.

I been playing and trying to develope my own strategies as well as learn how everything works. So far I'm just scratching the surface. I sit down for what I think is two hours and turns out to be six. Just one more turn... just one more turn... before going off to bed or work. When I'm at work and I'm thinking I can't wait to get home to play some more. A game that is like that is a success in my book. Now how long will it last? Good question. The maps are randomly drawn up so no two maps are ever exactly alike so that adds some replayability. And if they add MP later on and do it well that should extend its range of replayability as well.

I'm not using any DLC yet. I want to get to know the game really well before I try any of that. Considering the low entry price I'd say Paradox and the Devs have a nice little hit on their hands. If you like turn based games then this is one to definitely try.

I just beat my first game and I didn't even try to go into the portals. I was able to cream the AI before I had anything high enough level to attempt it. Playing on normal difficulty and map size with 3 opponents.

Portals can be nasty if you don't go in with some decent stuff. But they are easy with a decked out unit. I sent 1 unit of veterans in with all the upgrades they could get and they rocked it pretty hard solo, I had to toss a heal over time spell on them but they were able to work it good in there except for the dragons, couldn't attack air units lol.

Well I d/l the demo yesterday when I got home from work. Played that for about 5 min and then went and bought the game. Next thing I know 5 hours had disappeared. This is as close as I'll probably get to a MoM successor. I have to say the game is fun, and it does suffer alot from the "just one more turn" problem.

I'm playing on normal difficulty on a large map with 4 opponents. I'm not having any real problems so far, as I'm easily plowing through one of my opponents at the moment. I guess it helps that my second city I built has minotaurs, and I'm attacking him with 5 of them decked out with like 5 upgrades and a few spells. I'm still surprised he's killed one of them (damn all his wizards). Really can't wait to get back home to continue the fight (damn work).

The game does seem to be lacking some polish though. I wish there was a stats screen. It would also be nice to know if my spells that I was researching led to other spells, or is the new spell I can research just randomly chosen? The spell book could also use tabs to organize spells into catagories, as it seems to just be one long scrollable list, that gets ever longer as you play the game. A city, army and maybe an enchantment overview screens would also be nice.

I do like how they decoupled buildings and units, and you can do both simulatiously (something most games like this dont allow). I also like how you get 1 building per population unit, and the buildings are all useful. I'm also a fan of the no tax management and population happiness management. If I need more money, I just devote more of my buildings to ones that make money (banks, markets, etc). All this lets me focus more on creating and managing my army. I also like how all the citys have hit points and a ranged attack. That way I dont have to sentry a unit in every city I build, less it be immediately taken over by roving barbarians (monsters).

Very fun game. Looking forward to the multiplayer to play with friends and family and maybe online. Never played the Civ games or MMagic series, but I am a big fan of the fantasy genre . I played Paradoxs Rome game. It was good. So I bought this game for a change from my usual FPS and RTS games that I play.
