I'm really interested. According to the dev on the Steam forum when asked what the game is like, they said Civ in space.

Looks interesting. Not going to preorder but I'm adding it to my "keep an eye on" list. I love 4x games, when well done.

Emperor Special Edition.. "Your picture in our offices in Paris."
Say wut?
Game looks like another 4X genre with heros and some replayability. Yawn.

I pre-ordered it yesterday and installed but haven't gotten to play it yet. I only found out about it yesterday too and I jumped on the opportunity to support a title in this genre that I love.
Hope it will turn out to be a fun game ... haven't seen anything as good as MOO yet

Designable ships AND tactical combat? I like Distant Worlds quite a bit, but it's lacking the latter.

GalCiv2 is far better than any Civ game. Civ games are really one of the worst series when it comes to 4X games, but their arent many 4X games so I take what I can get.

From what I'm reading, you only have limited control over the battles.

seems like can can design a ton of crap and give orders to ships but not directly control them. Seems like there will be 3 or 4 ranges and you give orders what to use and when. I read that somewhere last night.

Been playing the alpha build for quite a few hours today... it's in surprisingly good shape for being in alpha! A lot of games get released in worse shape!
I love the interface, the colony management, the resources, economy, techs and ship designs.
I dont like the battles.
I guess it's sort of like GalCiv in the sense that you have 3 main damage types - kinetic, missile and energy. So you can design ships which have components that do those types of damage or defend against those types of damage - mixing it up if you want as well.
But in the battles you dont have direct control over ships, instead its sort of this phased battle where its first long range phase where missiles have bonus, then a mid range phase where energy weapons have bonus and then finally a melee phase where kinetic weapons are best.
But all you can do in each phase is choose a battle "card" which is this categorized tactic you have your fleet perform (categories like offense, defense, sabotage...). Each card has its own pretty significant effect during that phase but you have to be careful because cards can be countered by the opponent if they happened to pick a card that counters yours.
All in all I loved the game until I started doing battles. It's an odd system.

I bought it, but I haven't played it yet. I'll probably get around to trying it today.
Edit: I haven't gotten too far into it, but I'm kind of digging the strategy part. Interface seems pretty clean while still being interesting. Haven't have real battles yet, but given that EU3 is one of my favorite games I don't need deep tactical engines in my strategy games to enjoy them.

You don't really have control of your battles in TBS game and most RTS games that I recall sans Total War. I'm not sure I'd want to control battles directly as the rest of the game is depicted as pretty immense.
I wonder is Stardock has any plans to renew GalCiv, it's getting a little long in the tooth.

Me and a couple friends picked this up last weekend. Steam says I have about 17 hours into it already. We really like it so far. Definitely a MOO2 feel to a lot of the game. Battles definitely take some practice though. I think once you get the hang of it, it's a nice balance between auto (which is still an option) and full on control of each ship. If tactical combat/micro management is your thing this probably won't please you. But you still do get to design your ships and do have some control of the bonuses or "cards" in each battle phase. I didn't expect or want total war -like management of the battles and I think this is a nice compromise.
I haven't played a full game after the update to release code on the 4th but I did poke around and custom race is an option now for those that don't like any of the 8 included races. I'll probably get a new game in this weekend and see what else changed.

It's very, very good. I haven't enjoyed a 4X game this much since SMAC... and yes, that is high praise.
It lacks a bit of depth that SMAC had, such as the Government/Ethics types but it's really hard to put down. The races are all nice and varied and as mentioned, you can always create a custom race if you're not happy with what you're given.
Space battles look decent if you decide to watch them. This gives you the opportunity to lay down special actions for Long, Medium and Close range engagement ranging from increasing your defences to repairing your ship or scrambling the enemy's targeting systems.
The whole idea of research which allows you to colonise different planet types, spreading to multiple planets in a system, terraforming them, exploiting them, managing their populations and either making the most of natural resources or dealing with negative effects produced by a planet is fantastic and some of the biggest fun parts for me. Heck, you can even survey planetary moons or put colonies on asteroids!
Been playing for a few weeks and it's been great. The release day patch made it even better. Definitely recommended by me.

Outstanding game. I'm glad I preordered it. Highly recommend if you like GalCiv or MOO.

It would really be cool is some 4x game gave us something like Renegade Legion: Interceptor style of combat. It would mean that combat had to take place a lot less often then in most 4x games, but each battle would be epic.
