Default Are you supposed to rinse steak before you cook it?

Here in our little one-horse town, Wal-Mart is practically the only place left to buy groceries.
There, the steaks have some sort of "film" on them, feels like some sort of oil. I'm sure it is there to keep the meat from changing color, but you always have to rinse it off before you marinate, or the marinade will not penetrate the steak very well.
But yes, even if steak didn't have that film, I would still rinse it.

There was some report on one of the evening news shows years back and it stated that rinsing the steak even a few seconds cut down a lot on the carcinogens and otherwise has no negative effects, so, I do it.

I think that may only apply to tube steak Howard

In most cases it's probably wise to wash your meat before taking it to the fire....especially here in Nevada.........

I always wash any kind of meat that I am cooking...dont like it when it sits in that store package and goes right to the grill/frying pan...gross
