Default Taking Claritin-D everyday

I have horrible allergies and nasal congestion all of the time, so i started taking claritin-D (only non-drowsy allergy medication that seems to work for me). Is it ok to take it every day? Is there anywhere i can buy claritin-D (or a clone of it) in bulk for cheap? They didn't have claritin-D at my local costco.

Check out Target or any other place. There are plenty of generics. Or you can just get the 2 active ing. in generic form as well.

i do for 8 months a year so that i can function daily, but i have really bad allergies. even the weather changes set me off. i've tried the generics, the one that walmart sells seems to work okay, as well as publix.

I take a generic from Target every day for my cat allergies. I saw a doctor's assistant and they were the ones who recommended I do that. I've been doing it for a years and haven't noticed any problems whatsoever.

Topic Summary: bad idea?

Probably shouldn't do the D version daily.

The "D" in Claritan D is Sudafed (pseudoephedrine).

I know there's many generic versions of the normal claritin out there, but are you guys talking about generic version of claritin-D? I haven't seen generics of those around, but then again i haven't really looked.

If you don't need the decongestant aspect (the -D part), don't take it, as Dave suggested. Try the regular 24 hour formula and se if it takes care of your problems.

Look up the side effects of pseudoephedrin, not good for you at all.

Loratadine is the generic name fo claritin.

If you research it you will see I fought for years to get it to the OTC market.

Insurance Companies wouldn't put it on the covered list so it stayed outrageously high for longer than it should've and required Doctor visits.

It is the only antihistamine that works for my particular system for Spring and Fall Allergy.

Since then we are all losing in the Pharmacutical Dept, the Lobbying power of those Corporations have taken over to the point that all the insistence by the little people like us is irrelavent.

I've found the 24hr formula to be useless for me... I have to specifically find the 12hr version.

I've been very lucky the last few years. I can take a 24 hr one now, every once in a while as needed. I used to be on the 12hr stuff twice a day for 2~3 months a year.

yes, it's a bad idea to take allergy medicine everyday. it could lead to side effects and it could decrease the effectiveness.

Side effects can't be much worse than horrible allergies and congestion. It's really annoying. Though i still try and cut back on it when i can, though when i do it's a very noticeable difference. Regular Loratadine seems to do nothing at all for me.

"Taking any medicine everyday can't be good for you. "

where are you guys getting this stuff from?
Every doctor/allergist I've been to has said it is perfectly fine- no side effects. If one drug stops working you can try a different one. And as a side note- there are plenty of medicines DESIGNED to take every day...so not sure why you think its always bad to take medicine every day...
For those of you w/out bad allergies, you dont understand that there are days when I NEED somthing to be a functioning part of society- running nose, sneezing, bright red eyes- I wouldnt be able to go out anywhere with out somthing. Last year it was like that every day for months so I had to take the medicine every day for around 4 months. This year I've been lucky so far though (*knocks on wood*) and havnt had to take it much at all

Many people have adverse reactions to the Sudafed in Claritin-D (including me), which is why I take regular generic Claritin from Target. You may want to try a nasal steroid, like nascort or nasonex, but you'll need a perscription.

Would you take Sudafed every day? Because that's what the "D" in Claritin D is.

Edit: I personally get more out of straight Sudafed than Claritin.

Some medications can be taken for long term such as for asthma or diabetes, etc. Here's what you do. Consult your doctor or visit an actual forum for allergy sufferers. You'll get much more out of it.

I used to take alegra D/Claritin D/Zyrtec D religiously so I could function for most of the year like others..... However recently all I have had to use was Saline Nasal Spray. I prevents nasal buildup, so no post nasal drip either! Plus its dirt cheap as well!!

i don't usually suffer from allergies... only whenever i've gone a few weeks without getting my neck adjusted. i don't know why, but that's how it happens... during school, i get adjustments and my allergies don't bother me at all. but then, school ends and i don't get my adjustments and after about two weeks, i become an itchy, congested, red-eyed wreck. i can't wait til the studies on adjustments and allergies are completed.... there's a group of doctors in wisconsin trying to finish the study and get published.

either way, there haven't been any studies on long-term side effects of daily use of allergy medicines (obviously, since non-drowsy anti-allergy medicines are relatively new).

Doctor put me on Claratin D when I was 13-14, I took it daily for years. One day I just stopped. I never have allergy problems any more, I never knew why I was on it to begin with . . .

Never mind, I take the non-D version, I was confusing it with the "non-drowsy" version.
