Credit card debt in the US is getting out of hand

Teaching financial literacy in school has largely been shown to not work. You need one of two things: Just In Time teachings for specific financial decisions (student loans, getting a mortgage etc) or sustained education over many many years. Parents are best positioned for the latter. I realize...

    California Ending Hidden Consumer Fees

Eh - He said "Gone are the days of cheap hotels". That statement doesn't say it has to be weekend nights. Maybe that was an unstated personal requirement. All I have to go on is what he posted and I think the Luxor or LINQ for $60/nt is pretty dang cheap for a notable city in the US and I didn't...

Ok Amazon this is a little crazy but in a good way

We're now able to frequently get deliveries within a few hours any day of the week. Last Sunday I got a delivery within 6 hours of ordering. This morning my wife got her package within 3 hours. We try not to use them all the time but thats a level of convenience that is hard to ignore at times.

    California Ending Hidden Consumer Fees

I mean tourist destinations charging more for weekend/peak dates isn't all that new. The 3 times I've been back post COVID I haven't had a difficult time finding food or lodging at comparable prices with a little looking. All you can eat fish and chips at crown and anchor for $15 on Monday...

    California Ending Hidden Consumer Fees

This feels weird - I don't mean to defend Vegas as I'm not really a fan but I've had a lot of trips to Vegas, all due to conferences. If you're not going during a major conference you can still find pretty good hotel rates. Luxor and LINQ for $60-70/nt even after their $50 fees isn't bad...

Save all your receipts! Biden's garage sales tax kicks in next year.

I got a 1099 from Chase for credit card point referral bonuses since those equated to over $600. And we've sent out 1099s for contractors when we paid them over $600 for our business. This is just moving certain businesses/income streams in line with what all the others have to do

I don't know what's going on with business cards right now but they've been handing out a lot of really good options lately with almost no bonus eligibility limitations. Chase alone is sending sending us offer flyers in the mail faster than we can use them. My wife closed her Chase Business...

Barrel aged gin and peanut butter whiskey

I'm a big fan of barrel aged beer. Second favorite type after Belgium beer which doesn't get a ton of love in the US. Fortunately we have two pretty decent breweries barrel aged that in Michigan: Founders and New Holland. Not as great as the likes of Side Project or Bottle Logic but good...

FDA scientists have recommended that the federal government remove marijuana from its most restrictive category of drugs.

I have a sneaking suspicion that most people against decriminalization of weed have no actual idea of it's effects, hate minorities or both. Most things that get abused or smashed while high are just Doritos bags. And I don't think I've ever seen a belligerent person high on only marijuana.

In a country dominated by 'fast food', why not 'fast housing' - "McHouses" for the people.

Unless anyone here has a detailed spreadsheet of all the things they've purchased from the grocery store over the last 5 years and property sampled with the rest of their countries grocery stores this whole inflation is higher than advertised discussion is pretty silly. Regional pricing is a...

New Fallout Series Coming to Prime Video

I think there's room for the NCR to still exist farther away from what we've been shown. I don't think it's a lot of room but it feels like there's still a chance

New Fallout Series Coming to Prime Video

Yeah ok the show was really good. You could quibble here or there but with the direction a lot of shows have taken *cough witcher* *cough halo* that was some pretty dang good weaving of easter eggs into a well above average story line

Credit card debt in the US is getting out of hand

I don't think I said 'well over'. But to your question we've saved between 25-30% of our income for retirement since our very early 30s and budget a fair bit for travel and a new car to replace one of our older and owned outright vehicles. So, without the emergency fund, one of those buckets...

Credit card debt in the US is getting out of hand

We had over $16,000 in unexpected expenses last year. It was staggered throughout the year but it felt like a lot of bad luck all in the same year. Fortunately this year has been a bit of the opposite so far

    What are you drinking tonight?

Not tonight but a shipment just arrived. We had the chance to go to the Gouden Carolus brewery in January and it was freaking fantastic. My new favorite Belgium beer brewery. Zundert 10s are great too and rounded out the shipment with some other good looking beers I haven't tried yet

    Rural vs City death rates

We get international partners here who sometimes want to see more of the US during their visit so they'll extend the trip a couple days. To make small talk I'll ask them what they want to see "We'd like to see New York, LA and San Francisco. Maybe make it a road trip. How long of a drive is...

    Any solar eclipse plans?

Yeah it was weird - I feel like the schools missed a chance to get them engaged with like science and shit. One local school bought glasses for everyone but...didn't change their schedule at all so most had non-science classes during the eclipse. I hope all the teachers were able to just take...

    Any solar eclipse plans?

We got a notably stronger breeze here in MI Lots of birds chirping beforehand but pretty quiet during. I felt bad for the kids at the schools around here - most ran a normal schedule a lot of kids were stuck on a bus for totality.

    Drove by the old neighborhood

We drove by our first house this weekend because we happened to be in the area. House overall looked in pretty good shape which was nice to see since we really liked that house. The neighborhood was looking worn though - a lot of owners are not keeping up on home maintenance. Every third house...

Russia on brink of ... NOPE! Russia INVADES Ukraine!

I was there for a bit shortly after Trump took office. Different experience due to that timing because everyone wanted to talk to me about how they hoped we could have better relations now. But yeah it was very clear they think about us way more than we think about them. And they couldn't...

What's with some people and their insecurities of others having electric vehicles?

Sure but I'm talking total return for business. Hybrids need more standard maintenance like those oil changes, spark plugs etc that you mentioned that EVs don't. And your standard maintenance checklist is generally going to be longer than an ICE let alone an EV since you have ICE checklist items...

Yeah good luck if you actually go the 55mph speed limit on the highways around Detroit where everyone else is still doing 80 They're just the ones who were caught so far
