I'm not complaining about the $10 difference between XFX and other brands. The warranty is worth it. I'm talking about the $50 mark-up because of these damn supply issues. I'll wait til January. I'm buying my pieces as I get the money anyway, so it'd just sit here til at least then anyway.

I don't see a price cut coming until nVidia's new cards are released... and only if those cards undercut AMD's prices.

No worries man. Just reiterating what others were trying to point out. You never know, some people see the 2 in the front of the price versus a 3 and freak out even though it's 299 vs 309, lol.

I agree on the markup, wish I would've snagged one earlier. I'd be shocked if Nvidia matches the price on the 5800's though, so I'm not seeing these getting any cheaper soon.

Trust me it wasn't easy for me to give up on mean green, I've had a love affair with them for awhile and my last ATI experience (after my 9700 pro) ended in disaster so I've still got a sour taste in my mouth for ATI. Hopefully this bad boy will change all that :)

I guess Nvidia can keep their PhysX to accurately render one of their arse-cheeks before and after AMD/ATI kicking it :P

Most folks who have a life wouldn't even know what a 5850 is or why it's worth $250 of their money. ;)

Trust me, in this economy, the "only" (okay to be fair, the word "majority" would be better) people buying an over-priced GPU are people who don't have to worry about being laid off, paying rent/mortgage, etc. Of course there are also some people who would buy one who are just foolish with their money, live paycheck to paycheck and run up revolving credit. In either case, it's not like buying one of these right now is at all a -smart- thing to do.

SHAQ

They are losing the price advantage over the 295. I guess that is why Nvidia never lowered the price since they knew 5800's were in short supply.

pyro451
11-21-2009, 06:26 PM
The other special case where these make sense is a brand new PCIe system from an older AGP system (my situation).

A 4890 is still $160-$200 and there is no good upgrade path that includes DX11 support. So, if you wait for 5850s to come back down to $250, or even $200 then you have still spent $360-$400 on a single card soltution.

A 5850 (even at $300) allows an upgrade via a second 5850 when the prices come down for a crossfire platform.

So, it is not always a "stupid" purchase, even at the inflated prices.

I got a PowerColor 5850 a couple of weeks back and don't regret it at all. It's quieter than my old 8800gt, uses less power, and is twice as fast.

I only paid a little more for my 5850 than my 8800gt when it was first released. I paid $280 but even $300 isn't completely unreasonable for what you get imo. Especially with the overclocking.

Plus I can crossfire it in a year or so when the price drops for some serious fps.

$100 over MSRP is outta control. I'm practically speechless.

You have to figure with the 295 still ~$500 that the 5870 can't go up too much more. As it gets closer to that price point, you're paying for all the "extras" on the new tech (DX11, EyeFinity, etc.) and not performance. So as it approaches the 295 ceiling, it should enforce a cap on 5850 prices. Otherwise the "value" of the card everyone was excited about is going to disappear and it's going to be smarter to go with a 5870. Hell that new XFX card is already inside the $120 cushion that existed between the 5850 and 5870 at launch. I gotta think that 5850 price can't get much higher.

This, of course, assumes the buyers are rational, thinking, human beings. If the only thought running through their heads as they press the purchase button is "OMG NEW TECH GIMME GIMME GIMME!!", well....the rapid descent into price hell has only begun.

Digression: the Black Edition card is clocked a whole 10 mhz higher on the core, yet costs $30 more. Really? REALLY?!

XFX so far has nothing to offer, just like Diamond etc, all ref boards, mostly built by Sapphire, CP or other ATI OEM, I guess.

ASUS at least has its own OC utility with Vcore support though ref board cooling sucks. Sapphire's Vapor-X looks very nice though it vents into my otherwise water-cooled case so it's not ideal either and it isn't even shipping yet...

...I think I really should wait until custom boards start appearing and prices will spread out more.

Mwave, at least, is not consistent on their pricing. The MSI and HIS 5870s are $490 (both out of stock now BTW), while the XFX and Sapphires are at $410. The pricing is all over the place. I wonder if that will settle down once the supply problems are addressed, or will nvidia need to introduce their new models to bring some sanity back to the market.

I think the varying prices are an artifact of most recent availability. The items priced at $410 were last available some time ago, when that was the going price. The items priced at $490 were available more recently and demanded the higher premium. I suspect that if some XFX or Sapphire cards become available soon, you will see them repriced higher.

While that may be a factor, I believe there is more to it than that. A couple of weeks ago the Sapphire was $380 ($400 - $20 rebate). AFAIK, it never came back into stock. So, even if the rebate expired, they still raised the price over what they had before.

Now, all that being said...
I suspect that if some XFX or Sapphire cards become available soon, you will see them repriced higher.
...I don't doubt you are correct about that. Hell, if I was a retailer, I'd probably be doing the same thing. I do wonder if these price fluctuations are solely due to retailers, or if there is more to it at the manufacturer/distributor levels.

$315.99 wow. I laugh at suckers who pay over $50 MSRP.

Why? Try to hold the judgment, please. Maybe I just paid $50 for a new game, and want to play it at decent framerates so I need a new card. And I want to play the game now, not 3 or 4 weeks from now when prices might come down. If the game was worth $50 to me, then $50 over MSRP for a video card that allows me to play the game might be worth it to me too. It's simple supply and demand. Wanting something now and being willing to pay a premium for it does not make you a sucker. Premiums like that are everywhere, and we all make those sorts of decisions every day.

For example, here are some other statements as asinine as yours:

"I laugh at suckers who pay $10 to go see a movie when they can just wait for it to hit Netflix next year."

"I laugh at suckers who buy a $4 beer at a restaurant when they buy one at a liquor store and drink it on their couch $1."

"I laugh at suckers who buy the latest computer technology when they can pick up 2-year-old technology for a fraction of the price."

$$$ INFALTION, INFALTION....Next step they will email to you price target by Chinesse YAN...

That's the wrong use of the term.

Inflation (when used in terms of economics) is "a persistent, substantial rise in the general level of prices related to an increase in the volume of money and resulting in the loss of value of currency"

Yes we are seeing a persistence substantial rise in prices, but it is not a result of the American government printing more money. Prices in Radeon 5800s are not going up 10-15% because of American $$$ begin devalued. They are going up because that's what people are willing to pay for them.

I don't know if it means anything, but the Sapphire 5870 Cypress model has disappeared off Newegg's site. They just seem to have the Vapor X model on there. Not that they have any in stock...

The Intel X-25 G2 mania might provide a little perspective. Same price increases by Newegg, perhaps even more extreme. Yet just a week ago without much fanfare, Newegg had a G2 sale at MSRP. They sold out, but it was a "real" sale, for about a day you could have bought a G2 at MSRP from the same web store that, just a month earlier, was marking it up over two hundred dollars.

Things can change quickly. Just like with Intel, AMD is ramping up production. With rumours NVIDIA may launch in January, AMD knows they have to flood the zone soon with product (if they want to take back market share).

You make it sound like AMD could "flood the zone with product" any time they wanted and consciously aren't doing so for some reason.

It appears that NewEgg puts some in stock every day between 12:00 and 1:00 PM CST. Sometimes they put up another batch in the evening after 7:00 PM CST as well.

This post was on the money. Newegg had the Powercolor 5870 at $409 and the Sapphire Vapor-X 5870 at $419 today. Both were posted at 2:00PM EST. By 2:06PM EST they were sold out. And here it is 8:39PM EST and the Diamond 5870 is in stock, $409.

I can now say I personally saw (http://i47.tinypic.com/vnfnno.jpg) one of these in stock. :D

Just bought it for PC #2 (only paid $259 for my 1st 5850 for PC #1 when it first came out). I would have went for the 5870 in stock, but I figured I could use them both now in both machines, and maybe crossfire them in one of them next year.

How many 5850's and 5870's have went to vendors like Dell, HP etc. for their Windows 7 builds? Could that be where the lion's share of the cards are going to fulfill the OEM orders, and what is left over goes to retailers? I haven't seen any actual percentages of how AMD is dividing up cards.

Aggh I can feel it happening to me...boring winter break coming up, saved up video card money burning a hole in my pocket, no Fermi until March possibly. I may just put a lie to my claims of waiting until the 5970 reached $500 before I buy it. I know I shouldn't, but I might get the next one I see pop up available.

You should be able to just use the MSI afterburner tool, but I don't know if that will work on all boards.

I was very happy to pay $259 when the 5850 first came out, and was okay with paying $314 for my second. Average price of $287 for this card with no tax is a good deal. The problem is that a lot of people were expecting this card to drop to the $200 to $220 range instantly, and that never happens, regardless of competitors.

If it never happens, then why would people expect that to happen? I knew the prices were probably going to stay at MSRP until Christmas, but I (and other people) didn't expect it to go up 30% to 40%.

I tried to buy a 5850 not too long after launch for ~$250 (after BCB) at ewiz, but they didn't actually have any in stock then cancelled my backorder, but by then it was too late for me to find another even close to MSRP.

He he I can already feel it receding. When it first came out I was thinking "$599 - F that!" Then, as Fermi became more and more of a distant dream I started to become ok with that price. By that time it had shot up quite considerably and I might have even considered $650, but now I'm cooling off. I'm sure this exact situation is described somewhere in my intermediate microeconomics textbook.

That price if $479 for the 5870 is nuts. That is supposed to be a $379-399 card. I hope no one is buying them for that much, although I know people are.

edit: I wouldn't trust mwave's "in stock" either. I ordered a supposedly in stock 7900GTX from them years ago, and they totally didn't have it. They gave me some run around about having to verify my shipping/billing address (when they matched) for two days and still didn't ship it. Eventually, I got a rep on the phone that admitted they just didn't have the card in stock. I don't even think the card was hard to find at the time, but mwave had the best price. Not worth the hassle, I stick with the egg or ZZF now.

my scientific wild ass guess is that if the 5800 series cards continue to be available online we'll see some drastic price cuts after Christmas.

Well, drastic in the sense that they'll go back down to what they were in September.. maybe lower but I'm not too sure about that. When Fermi comes out there will be more price drops.

Holy cow, that brings me back to when I had the Antec 900. Great case, but atrocious amounts of filthy dust accumulated in it. I'm really glad they started putting dust filters on the 1200. According to this article (http://hardocp.com/article/2009/11/10/o_5800_wherefor_art_thou) it was going to be late November or early December when we see higher numbers of Radeon 5xxx series released. Specifically it was said to be be raised from "thousands a week" to "tens of thousands a week" which would be a substantial increase. At least a two fold increase in supply. I'm sure that that's what we're seeing right now.

I don't see prices dropping any time soon, this is the holiday shopping season but likely in January the prices will drop down to MSRP and likely lower than MSRP by the time Fermi is released.

Second-tier retailers must rejoice at such an easy target with to take customers from. Just have a sale comparing your price to Newegg...$40 less!! (still MSRP plus a healthy markup), advertise, then watch the business start rolling in from the droves of people whose first point of comparison is the Newegg price. Newegg is so big they probably don't even notice (or care) for weeks.

I'm going to keep my eyes peeled in the hot deals section. I learned about a lot of reputible, second tier on-line sites when I shopped for my second Intel G2 SSD.

Haha I noticed that too! Just made me slap my head thinking about the amount of overkill involved when using a corei7 and 5970 for the Source engine.

Man, the 5970 is such a rare commodity still! I figured it might have let up by now, given the availability of all the other 5 series cards, but I guess not. Maybe after X-mas.

I find this to be odd (though I have no idea how online etailers choose to list and delist certain products): now the 5970 is only showing up from two partners. The reviews and listings for all the other partners have disappeared and the two remaining ones are (of course) unavailable. This 5970 drought is crazy.

The good news is Newegg has tons of 5850s and 5870s in stock, so maybe the drought of those is finally in the rear view mirror. Unfortunately, I imagine the return of supply will not result in a decrease in price back to old MSRP. Probably have to wait until Fermi for that.

prices will be back to normal, or very close to normal at the beginning of January. signs for that can already be seen. Newegg got Sapphire cards for 299$ which is 10$ down since last week. amazon got both Sapphire and Visiontek for 299 down. and we're still in the shopping season. after the shopping frenzy ends prices will have to go down.

I agree. It'll take newer cards or most other sites lowering their prices to get NE to lower prices to original MSRP. This is assuming supplies can stay plentiful. Hopefully competition will take hold and drive down costs again soon.

FOR AMAZON ONLY!!!

learned about www.eyeitforme.com (http://www.eyeitforme.com)

you type in the ASIN number for the graphics card (or any other product, useful for future SD hot deals) and the site automatically polls amazon for stock, you can choose amazon as seller, or third party or used whatever

anyway when the item is in stock (lets say you just leave the browser open in the background) the page sets off an alarm to let you know the item is now in stock.

(also good if you want a refurb TV from warehousedeals)

basically all 5850 brands are in stock at Newegg and Amazon. and every other online store i visit got few brands in stock.

Amazon sell Sapphire brand for 287.20$ right now. which is a good move by them, as other brands probably sitting on the shelves collecting dust... which mean, that we can expect the rest of the brands to have a price drop soon.

Newegg got Powercolor and Assus at 299$. my suggestion is to WAIT. two weeks from now most brands will sell for 260-270$. no reason to buy now. January and February are the slowest months at retailer and prices will have to go down. it's already started, as you can see. so just keep hanging.

prices are going down and fast. While amazon had Sapphire brand at 285$ for some time now newegg were reluctant to join the price cut. Not anymore. Three different brands (Visiontek, Sapphire, PowerColor) are available for 289.99. A few others, like the normal XFX, Diamond,Msi and HIS are available for 299$. The only ones which are more expensive are Gygabyre and the expensive XFX models (which are useless in my opinion). Availability, of course, isn't a problem anymore.

Give it two weeks and the price will drop to 269$ so hang on for a bit

I ordered the HIS 5850 from ZZF over the weekend. Today I noticed the order was still in "Packed" status, so I inquired about the status, and they let me know that the order was not in stock and they do not expect stock within the next two weeks, so they will have to cancel my order.

If you ordered a card from ZZF recently and it hasn't already shipped, I strongly encourage you to contact them to make sure the item is actually in stock. I missed out on a similar card for cheaper at Newegg yesterday because I couldn't cancel my ZZF order.

Edit: Ordered the sapphire from MWave, I don't want to wait any longer so I did 2-day shipping and used the $10 coupon to have a final price of $285 shipped. Thanks for the heads up!

I stopped ordering from ZZF for this reason. It was also taking two days (and a phone call) on items they did have in stock, they blamed it on Paypal. That's BS.. Newegg, Mwave, Ewiz, and others, no problems..

Is this a decent deal for the XFX Radeon HD 5770 (HD-577A-ZNFC) for $153 after 10% BCB? I'm thinking on buying this tomorrow.

Mind you they are all non-reference boards and will not allow voltage adjustments, I don't think they will overclock to reference oc speeds.
