View Full Version : 100 Day Burpee Challenge

I have decided to do the 100 Day Burpee Challenge (http://www.crossfitsantacruz.com/crossfit_santa_cruz/burpee-challenge-details.html) and invite all you to join. The first day will be Friday, April 3. The rules:

1. Use Burgener's burpee standards for form (check out the official standards (http://www.crossfitsantacruz.com/crossfit_santa_cruz/burpee-challenge-details.html) and the demonstration video (http://media.crossfit.com/cf-video/CrossFit_Burpees.wmv)).
2. You can complete each day's burpees all at once, or broken up and done at different times throughout the day.
3. If for some reason you miss a day, you have to make up all the missed burpees the following day.
4. If you don't start the challenge on day 1 (April 3), you can "buy-in" at any time by doing ALL the missed day's burpees on your first day.
5. Any burpees you complete during your regular workout can count towards that day?s Challenge burpees, if you want them to.

Let's see if we can get through this :)

Sign me up. I do them regularly, but not 100 at a time. I'm going to need to be able to do a ton of them eventually anyway, so I might as well get started now.

I take it that even though we can buy in, we can't bank any i.e. do more than required then cash them in for days we slack or miss, correct?

Right. The idea is to do at least the prescribed number of burpees each day. You can certainly do more, but they don't count towards the challenge.

We did a body weight WOD today, it was brutal and fun!

"Broomstick Mile" (all with PVC):

25 front squats
25 back squats
25 OH squats
Run 400m
25 OH press
25 push press
25 push jerk
Run 400m
50 cleans
Run 400m
50 snatches
Run 400m

Then I did my 2 burpees after I stopped gasping for air. :)

How's everyone keeping track of how many burpees we're on? Early on, it's easy enough...Brikis, maybe you could start your OP with a bold number for how many burpees we're doing? :)

I'm also doing 2 days back to back for some of these early days. So I'm going to wait til 11:59PM Monday night, 4 and then 5 for Tuesday. :P

So I just joined the forum <virtual shaking of hands> ...let me know if I'm gettin this right. So for today I will need to do 36 Burpees to get me up to speed, then 9 starting tomorrow 10 the next and so on and so forth till day 100?

04/11: 9 burpees. Actually, my metcon workout today was:

For time: 50 burpees. Jump one foot above max reach on each rep.

Took 3:02, which is a new PR for me, despite a calf injury and being fatigued from deadlifts earlier in the workout. Once we get to the 50 burpee mark in this challenge, I think I'll repeat the workout to see if I've made an improvement.

While I'm not in this challenge (hmm maybe I will join late) I just wanted to say thanks for the form video. I'm doing CF mainsite now (few months behind) and always struggled with high rep burpees. Last night I discovered it was because I was crashing down into the push-up. I focused on going slightly slower but squatting down then kicking legs out as shown in the video, made a HUGE differnece. I did the 10 rounds for time of 12 pull-ups/burpees (scaled to 9 reps per round, 90 total) faster than I expected because of the change.

Hmm if I count those 90 from last night I'm only 1 off not counting the 15 for 4/16/09, what a coincidence.

That's great to hear. Many of the videos on the Crossfit Exercises (http://www.crossfit.com/cf-info/excercise.html) page are very helpful & amusing, so check them out when you have time.

4/16 - 14 + 1 as part of warm-up today, now 105 total and caught up. I'm doing them strict form as in the CF demo because of the added benefit of the push-up. My high-rep push-ups are weak and it ruins any WOD time with push-ups.

4/18/09 - 15 + 16 during warm-up (missed yesterday). Broke them up a bit (12/4, 8/7) since WOD was 4x400 and I didn't want to wear myself down much. From now on I will probably try to do them consecutively after work-outs since I want to increase my capacity in high rep burpee WODs.

Awww, c'mon, quit being a pansy. Just start making up all the burpees you missed in your workouts and you'll be caught up in no time :)

I remember when I started Crossfit last year, I couldn't actually do 20 consecutive burpees. Now it's just a nice warm-up. How I wish I had found CF sooner :)

Ok basically the last time I did this was 04/09 for 7 burpees. I already plan on catching up this saturday 04/25. If i did the math correctly, then I'll be doing 248 burpees throughout saturday to catch up. Wish me luck!! I can definitely see the importance of keeping on track with this challenge.

Heh, either you're in fantastic shape or don't have much experience with burpees. If you pull off all 276, I'll be mightily impressed. Most I've done is 150 in a single workout (mixed in with 1.5 miles of running) and I was sore for a long time after.

4/25 - 22 + 23 burpees - did them in 20/15/10 sets with little rest, felt good (after wod of max squat cleans)
4/26 - 24 burpees - did them after modified Angie (50/50/100/100) - absolutely horrible, had to break up into 10/7/7 was felt like barfing

In terms of days we are at 25% of the challenge. In terms of burpees we are at 6.4% (325/5050). Haha.

Heh. We actually only cross the 25% mark in terms of burpees on day 50 and the 50% mark on day 71. Loooong way to go :)

I've been avoiding trying to figure that out. It's not such a big number that it's insurmountable, but damn, it's big.:shocked:

I've been looking ahead to the time when the numbers are too big to complete all the burpees in a few sets at night or after my regular workout.

I contemplated doing them all in one set, but I stopped at 20 and did another set of 15. I've been going over the daily amount on days that I don't make it to the gym. That will probably stop once we get over 50.

4/28 - 26 broken up into 13/13. Did these after 2x 500M rowing sprints and was gassed. I need to start doing them as part of my warm-up since I want to improve the number i can do in a row versus breaking them up into sets at the end of my workout.

Ugh. Well too late to join in on the masochistic fun.
However, I guess I don't quite need the "challenge", as I have already had to do more than 100 burpees, broken up, in the span of an hour.

We've been doing some crossfit stuff as extra pt. Burpees are now the workout I hate the most. :P Especially when its only one exercise in a series for cardio.

But keep it up guys. It's a good workout, especially if you knock them all out in basically one sitting, or take a few minute break and continue on.

I backed out from this a while back just because life has been a little busy for me. Luckily I'm getting into running so I might start posting in the 10,000 miles for AT thread. I'm glad people are still doing this challenge though! Props.

Was busy at work this week so I haven't posted. Kind fo fell off the wagon, on 4/29 I did the 27.

4/30 - end of tax season party at work (heavy drinking) (s/b 28)
5/1 - heavy hangover = rest day (s/b 29)
5/2 - Did WOD but forgot about burpeees (s/b 30)
5/3 - 35 (s/b 31)
5/4 - Rest day (forgot/did nothing) (s/b 32)
5/5 - 35 (s/b 33)
5/6 - 40 (s/b 34)
5/7 - Rest day (forgot/did nothing) (s/b 35)

so by my calculations I am behind 142 burpees. Tomorrow's WOD is 5 rounds of 25 burpees, 25 pull-ups, 25 inverted burpees. I'll probably scale to 18 of each which gives me 90 less the 37 of the day which puts me only 89 behind to make up.

Then I'm going on holidays next week for 6 days which will probably include more heavy drinking (wedding). Ugh, this is harder than I thought :)

Ugh, that workout sucked. I didn't know how to do a kip-up back then, so I did inverted burpees with just a roll, and it still took bloody forever.

Yea, falling behind is very costly in this challenge. However, if you sneak in a quick set of burpees here and there through out the day, you could catch up in no time :)

I don't think I've ever tried a kip up other than screwing around as a kid. I'll play around on some mats tomorrow (luckily the gym is pretty empty on Saturdays) and see if I can get it, although I doubt I'll be able to do 90 of them that way.

I'm thinking of trying to do the burpees in the mornings, but my only concern is not being warmed up and hurting myself. Excuses excuses :)

Down to 85 now, making those up after the inverted burpee/pull-up/burpee WOD was not happening. I scaled it to 18 reps of each exercise per round (from 25) and it still took 45:55. Brutal.

It looks like it. Gramboh was in and out, but he hasn't posted anything in a while.

@brikis98 - I think I'm going to have to break these up throughout the day too, especially as we get into higher numbers. I'm going to be stuck in a hospital with my wife for most of next week, so I may have to get creative with the timing and location of these. I reckon the nurses won't be too happy with me if I'm jumping up and down in the post-partum unit.

I'm out guys, last day I did them was 5/9, had an injury and was out of town partying (lame excuse). The amount I'd have to make up now is too painful to think about. I might just re-start at 40 and go from there on my own but I won't be able to do the challenge properly. Good luck :)

around 25 or 30 i started breaking them up into 3 sets during warmups (except for 36 when i was challenged to see how many i could do in a row). at 40 i started breaking them up into 4 sets.

i believe at 50 i'll have to start breaking them up into different parts of the day :o

Thanks for the congrats. I have small amounts of spare time during the day, but I haven't used any of them. I end up doing my burpees at night when he's eating or sleeping. Maybe I'll split them up better tomorrow.
