View Full Version : Looking for software to do a randomized picture slideshow.

My sister-in-law is getting married this weekend and I've been instructed to scan a few hundred photos for a slideshow that will play throughout the reception. I've completed the scanning and cropping but am now having trouble with what I assumed would be the simplest task....finding a suitable slideshow program.

I have a folder with about 400 pictures that are named pic001, pic002, pic003, etc. I've basically scanned in all of the bride's pictures first, from her kid pictures up through her college graduation and present day, then scanned in the groom's kid pictures up through his college graduation and present day. Needless to say, I want the pictures to be completely randomized throughout the slideshow, not show all the bride's pictures first and then the groom's, only to repeat.

I didn't figure this would be a big deal, but thus far I've tested Windows Live Photo Gallery 2011, Picasa 3.8, and Zune, and none of them seem to offer a random option with the slideshow. This completely baffles me. A google search shows that Picasa doesn't even have the option, Zune doesn't have the option, and I can't find any info regarding WLPG (but the random option isn't there, I've looked everywhere).

The only slideshow option I can find is with the Windows 7 photo viewer, but the problem is two-fold. First, I'll be using a laptop with XP, and second, I want a slideshow program with some kind of pan/zoom, fading effect...not just a static switch from picture to picture.

Can anyone recommend a program (preferably free) that can manage to do a random slideshow with at least some minor transition effects?

EDIT: As soon as I posted this thread, I remembered using Irfanview a few years ago for batch processing. I just downloaded it and it allows me to do a randomized looping slideshow with very simple fade transition effects. I wouldn't mind for a little more fancy transition effects, so I'm still open for suggestions. However, Irfanview will suit my needs should I not find something better.

\has more transition effects than you'll ever need...

Just gave that a shot and it looks to be PERFECT for my needs. Thanks a lot UberNeuman! You just gave me more work though, since I'll have to go through all those transition effects and find a couple that don't look too amateur. :)

You might also look at Windows Live Photo Gallery. It has a decent Screen Saver SlideShow with different themes.

Well I'll be damned, the screen saver is where they hide the random options. Who'da thunk it. Looks like that will be an option now, too, assuming the same options are available on XP and depending on if the lowly laptop I'll be using can manage to not chug on those WLPG themes. They do look nice.
