View Full Version : PayPal SCAM

LarryL
01-30-2001, 11:53 PM
At 9:23:58AM EST 1/30/01 Someone authorized a ACH from one of my checking accounts to PayPal for $300
One second later the same thing happend but it used another of my checking accounts for $510

So I will have $810 in my PayPal account. I am assuming that the next thing to be done is to steal this money from me. I noticed this when PayPal sent me two emails authorizing the ACH's.

Now I am busy trying to stop these transfers. PayPal tells me they can't stop an ACH once requested.
I locked my PayPal account so no money will go out. But this could be a pain in the ass if I can't stop these funds from my two banks.

Check your PayPal accounts.

OK now all you jerks who want to flame me because this is not a Hot Deal. F*** Off

Hmm, I was thinking about whether I should link my checking account to my PayPal account so I can get the money people send me faster. Now I'm having second thoughts.

What exactly is an ACH? It just sounds like your money got transfered from your checking account to your PayPal so you didn't actually lose any money correct?

XL
01-31-2001, 01:10 AM
I to would like to know what ACH is? I don't think anyone is going to flame you for posting this.It seems like your trying to lookout for the rest of us since alot of people here use paypal. "Good Heads Up"

EternalLightYears

Automatic Clearing House. they are the electronic way of taking money out of your checking account

Nutzo
01-31-2001, 01:26 AM
That's why I never verified my paypal account. Once someone takes money out of your checking account, you are out of your money unless you can get them to give it back. At least with a credit card, you can dispute the charge.

I basically stopped accepting Paypal on my auctions, when all the stories came out about Paypal locking accounts or pulling money out of peoples accounts because someone payed them with a bad card. You have to depend on PayPal to verify the person sending you money, yet it was your problem when PayPal failed.

iluvdeal
01-31-2001, 01:35 AM
That's my fear about using PayPal, someone pays me with a stolen CC#, I send out the stuff, find out it's stolen, and not be able to get a real payment. I was reading PayPal's website and it said they to protect against this, has experience been different?

callgirl
01-31-2001, 01:35 AM
ACH is an Automated Clearing House transfer, guys. Similar to a wire transfer, without the wire or the high fees. :) I believe the cost to the bank of doing an ACH transfer is 25-50 cents, and banks usually do not charge customers for such transfers. ACH is commonly used to transfer funds directly between checking accounts (that's all I've used it for anyway), but I believe you can also transfer from say an online checking account to an offline savings account. ACH transfers generally take 2 business days to complete. There are online services that perform ACH transfers; one of them is http://www.achex.com

They DONT take money outta your account to verify you.. they make two *DEPOSITS* then you simple tell them how much it was.. were do did you
think they make a withdrawl?

Thank you, LarryL... man I'm scared now. *removes her account from Paypal*

SinnerWolf
01-31-2001, 02:56 AM
I think PayPal is a good service all in all. I've used it for quite a few things and never had a problem. There's an easy solution if you don't feel comfortable with online access to your account. Make a new account, and put a very low amount of funds in it. 2-10 should suffice. whenever you make a purchase using paypal, transfer funds to the new account from your primary or checking. Never keep more then 2-10 in the paypal access account.

And if anyone has had their account compromised with ANY service or site, CHECK YOUR COMPUTER FOR TROJANS/OTHER VIRUSES RIGHT NOW! You have no idea how easy it is to access every single keystroke you make if you've got a virus that enables a backdoor. An individual only has to do a light scan to determine if you've got such a virus on your computer. This goes to AOL users especially. AOL is the most popular ISP for novice comp users, and also the easiest target for people without morals. be aware and protect yourself

Hi Larryl,

Please send me your email address to damon@paypal.com.

Did you click on any links or enter any strange sites that were not paypal.com?

Someone had questioned the login page and security---here is what happens-) User goes to paypal.com

2) A plaintext (not encrypted) copy of our front page is loaded to the
user's browser. It contains zero sensitive information, excluding your
email address, if that is pre-filled.

3) Optionally, take a look at the HTML of the front page: The ACTION tag
of the username/password form is something along the lines of
"action=https://secure.paypal.com/webscr..." . This means the following:
upon submission of this form, a secure connection must be established.

4) When you click "login", a secure SSL connection is established to
secure.paypal.com, accodring to the action tag of the form.

5) All the data you've entered in your browser is trasmitted securely to
secure.paypal.com, via an SSL-encrypted connection.

6) The resulting page, your account summary comes up via the same the
encrypted connection and is secure.

Therefore no sensitive data, excluding your email address is ever
transmitted across the interent insecurely.

The same thing happened to me. I received an email message saying that my email address was changed today, yet i never changed it.

To my surprise when I logged into paypal there was an additional email address, I believe it was pay4pal@att.net

They tried to transfer $779 each from my CC and bank account, fortunately both were denied. But, to be on the safe side I removed the email address, removed all accounts and changed my password.

I contacted customer service at paypal. She notified her supervisor and apparently they were looking into this situation. She asked if I responded to any email message or phone call that either ask me for my password or to verify my information. I told her that I didn't but she insisted that I must have. Funny thing is I haven't used paypal since September nor have I received any emails from them not to mention this is the first time I talked to paypal on the phone. The only time I received a message was when X.com and Paypal.com were merging and X.com asked for all users to close there accounts with them.

Was paypal possibly hacked into?

I would say that if you had your bank account info listed with PayPay, there would be a chance they could get into it, just like they did LarryL's.

Myself, I just changed my password since I had a virus on my machine in the last few days.

LarryL, thanks for the heads up. Hope you get this straightened out.

Thats why my paypal is hooked up to an old bank account, and the two accounts never hold more then $20 bucks for very long. Whenever I recieve money through paypal, it goes to the checking account, and then is spent on a bill.

Its always good to have an alternate payment processor including paypal, paypal is not just enough. Depending your location you can use 2checkout, WorldPay, ChronoPay, Google checkout etc including paypal. This will give variety of option to your customers and you can not loss everything if something go wrong with paypal.

you can open multiple account #s on the same bank account. i keep one "crap" account empty and have it verified with paypal, the other one with all the money they don't know about (i assume). i just use my cc each time to make a payment. that way i can never get cleaned out my someone hacking my paypal.

AFAIK, some old threads that were stickied at one time somehow escape being archived. I think it was a bug in the previous version of the forum's software.

I recently did a transaction online, and against my better judgement I accepted a payment by PayPal. I've used it in the past to make payments from a pre-loaded credit card, but never really trusted them enough to receive payments in my account. I had used this account about 10 times in the last 2 months to make purchases online, ranging from $10 up to several hundred. There was never any questions as to the activity on the account...until I received a payment. Literally within 3 minutes of receiving a $400 payment in my account, PayPal suddenly decides to put a hold on my account, "For a sudden increase in account activity volume". What a load of bullshit! They are now requiring me to go through a 6 step verification process before they will lift the limitation on my account. I can still ADD funds to the account (why would I want to?) but of course I can't send a payment or try to withdraw anything. Meanwhile, PayPal is taking their sweet-ass time getting evrification forms to me in the snail-mail, and making it extremely difficult for me to complete this process. I should have followed my initial instinct...
