Hey guys and gals,
I know that Woodcrest is the Core-based Xeon CPU, but given the drastic difference in CPU MHz (with both CPU's costing nearly the same), would I be better off to get the Dempsey-based Xeon at 3GHz? I can't find any benchmarks comparing the lower-end Woodcrests against Dempseys.

Netburst is headed for the graveyard and lets keep it there shall we :)
Run cooler, spend less to operate, Save energy, Save the planet...
Go Woodcrest all the wayyy.
If your worried about Mhz you should look at how a Dual Core Opteron 265 (1.8Ghz) does up agenst a Dempsey-based Xeon at 3.73 GHZ
---------------------------------------------------------
3.73 GHZ Dempsey Xeon 5080 fragged by 1.8GHZ Opteron 265
The much hyped Dempsey (Xeon 5080) with the Blackford chipset (the so called Intel Bensley platform) is finally available for independent tests. The result is embarassing for Intel. The 3.73GHZ Dual core Dempsey server got squarely beaten by 1.8GHZ Opteron 265 in Apache web server benchmarks. Opteron 265 is AMD's lowest dual core server chip. In less bandwidth demanding workstation application tests, the 3.73GHZ Dempsey did better.
Clearly, Intel's imitation of Athlon MP 's dual bus is not going to solve Intel's FSB bottleneck problem. Please note that Woodcrest (Xeon 5100) share the same Bensley platform. No wonder Intel only allows controlled benchmarks of Woodcrest in its own labs.

Opteron is still king of bandwidth but looks like Processing power is now with Woodcrest ;)

Well, unfortunately my decision was made for me by the client. They wanted to spend as close to $4K as possible, so I had to go with the Dempseys. :( Oh well, it's not my server anyway! :D

I think some people just feel like spending more money means they are getting a better setup

Yeah, I know. Right now only 5% of their business is conducted online, but they want that to change and I wanted to get them something a little more "future-proof" but the server I got will do fine.
Part of me just wanted to get the Woodcrest just because it's Conroe-based. :D
