upgrade the CPU

heyhey

I have an old Toshiba Protege 2000 which only really had one configuration at 750mhz with a P3 mobile CPU. It's obviously quite slow by today's standard but quite handy as it weighs about 2 lbs. (it's maxed out at 512mb of ram)
Anyway, I wanted to know if someone here might know if it's possible to upgrade to a 1-1.2ghz P3 mobile CPU. I did a google search but w/no luck :(
what do you think?

If the all-knowing Google doesn't show anyone having done this then odds are the motherboard doesn't support it.

Possible issues include coppermine vs. tualatin chips (if 750 mobile was coppermine) and overheating from the faster chip.

But if Google doesn't know who am I to say?

Hardly ... the above-1 GHz mobile P3 were substantially different to the 1GHz and below - exactly the Tualatin vs. Coppermine thing. The fastest Coppermine (1GHz) was pretty ridiculous thermally anyhow, so I don't think anything above 800 would be an "easy" upgrade - and that'd be kind of pointless.

If you want this thing to be faster, give it a modern hard disk and as much RAM as it can take.

Start saving for a new Core2Duo machine.

Only if you replace the mother board first. It is just not worth looking into any further in my opinion.

You would be better off buying a refurbished laptop that weighs around 2 lbs with a faster processor and more memory.
