I have a ThinkPad values $1000 that is running out of the original 1-yr warranty. The battery was dead this month and I found the warranty service was pretty handy to get a replacement battery. But is it necessary to extend the warranty? The rate is $140 for 1 yr and $259 for 2 yrs. I am a CS major and can handle most software problems and simple hardware conflicts by my own. Is it worth to pay extra to just warrant for the hardware mechanical problems?

Not in my view. You can be self insured for the same amount. Thinkpads are pretty tough and can endure a lot of abuse. Take care of it and it should not be a problem.
In general, I find warranty extensions to be very profitable for the seller - ergo statistically not so for the consumer.
Am now on my 6th laptop since 1994 and have never had an extended warranty. Batteries have a finite life - anything over 2-3 years is good. You can replace the battery within the two year window and beat the warranty cost.

Most batteries are only covered under a 1 year warranty even if the laptop has a 3 year warranty for itself. Dell,HP, even Apple's warranties are like this.

Depends how long you foresee yourself keeping the laptop.
