I was thinking of putting a SSD drive inside an IBM X30 so I can use it in hot rugged areas. Is this possible?

If the interface is corresponding, I don't see why not.

To put what he said in simpler terms, as long as you plug a PATA drive into a PATA laptop, it should work just fine. Now some laptops get kinda weird with proprietary drive caddies and all that, but as long as you still have all the parts it should work just fine. Just make sure your new drive is the same size as the old one, almost definately 2.5", and the same interface, most likely PATA if the thing is five years old.

You might need to be a little careful here--there are at least two kinds of PATA connectors--micro-ATA and ZIF. If you look here (http://www.dvnation.com/nand-flash-ssd.html) at the 1.8" drives, you'll see what they look like. Not sure if it's the same for 2.5".

The current max capacity is only 64 GB - and you will pay through the nose. It just deosn't seem logical to me. But . . . if that turns your crank - go for it. It is just possible that the "hot, rugged" area may have more effect on your CPU and battery than your HDD.

I'm planning on camping out when I drive across the United States and I will have my laptop inside my car for almost two months. I'm only planning on using the laptop for about 15 minutes every day to make reservations and look at maps and weather, so I'm not concerned about the processor or battery, however I've read stories that laptops being inside a hot car can melt the hard drive. Not sure if this is true. That's why I'm looking at a SSD

Bump^. gamer22, made any progress?

I bought an X40 and plan on making the SSD upgrade myself.
